My mother and I took the CZ to Reno from Denver and back.

Our first reservation was a roomette out to Reno and one on the return trip. The roomette going to Reno was priced a bit high and was in the crew car. After thinking and talking about the higher cost we decided to cancel the roomette and reserve two lower level coach seats. Everyday I looked up fares to the rooms hoping to get a lower priced room. A family room came up and was priced the same as our original higher priced roomette. We changed from the lower level seats to the family room. Excited to be in one as it has been years since I have ridden in one.

We arrived at Denver station about two hours early and had a delicious breakfast at the Snooze Cafe.

After breakfast sat in the main hall.

It really is a nice station, the restaurants and shopping is a plus. However, the way they packed the seating areas in, to me, looks like a mess. I miss the grand feel of Union Station with the huge wooden benches. I loved those. I think it a bit sad that Amtrak is just a very very small part of the station.

I sort of wish they would have kept the temporary station, much more convenient than Union Station.

But it is what it is.

I don't think the train was very late coming in. We went to our car and met our attendant and right off my mom tells her of our experience with the lazy attendant on our last trip :eek:hboy: The attendant was nice and helpful but again another who doesn't like to empty trash containers.

Our room wasn't ready and we were told we could go and have breakfast. Well, I was full as we had just eaten breakfast but my mom wanted to eat again  So we ate again. I had the french toast and was stuffed!

Our family room. Loved the size, the windows on each side. The larger couch was awesome.

At night, after much discussion, my mom and I decided to use just the two lower beds, of course the one is super small. We tested laying out on both of them and seemed like a good idea. I laid partly on the small bed and the larger one. But, there is a ridge or a gap between the two mattresses that we tried stuffing with a blanket. Since I was the one laying on the ridge I soon realized that was not a good idea at all. :( My mother was very insistent about this setup working and put the ladder in the closet. Yes I am an adult but to keep the peace I remained where I was <_<

Needless to say, I had a very uncomfortable night. The room was also rather noisy but it did not ruin my trip.

Backtrack to lunch, we sat down and a couple joined us, the man asked if they could join us and they sat down. The wife ignored us, never looked at us, we tried to talk with them but no luck, so we sat there and ate in silence. My mom and I of course talked but it was very odd indeed.

Dinner must have been uneventful, I don't remember it.

We arrived in Reno a few minutes late. Took a cab to the airport to pick up a rental car.

We used comped rooms for this trip.

Our first hotel and casino was Atlantis, first time staying here, loved the casino from a previous trip. We were able to check in to our room at about 10am which was very nice!

Gambled and picked up my sister from the airport later that night.

We stayed at Atlantis for 3 nights. Loved our room and of course the casino. Had a little bit of luck and a lot of fun.

We drove to a couple of other casinos while here.

My sister, the drinker, did not drink at first. I was waiting for it because of our previous trip to New Orleans. She did mention a couple of times that it would be fun to sit and have a drink at the bar. I thought, have at it sister. She did start to order her drinks while playing. She has to think my mom and I are super boring. But she seemed to have fun.

Our next stay was at the Silver Legacy, love it here too. Stayed here 2 nights. Again had a little bit of luck.

My sister was here only one night and we returned her to the airport.

The next morning, wow oh wow was I lucky at the machines. And then the luck ended  But still had fun.

Our third hotel stay was at the Grand Sierra for 2 nights. We checked in and it was a lot of walking for my mom. Our room was decent but I don't care for the casino here. While getting ready for bed we decided to see if the Silver Legacy would comp us another room, they did. Checked out in the morning and spent our last night at the Legacy.

I really do like Reno, the smaller casinos.

While getting ready the morning for us to leave Reno, I checked prices on bedrooms and for a couple hundred more, we upgraded from a roomette, I love those bedrooms.

The CZ was a few minutes late.

We boarded and met the attendant Linda, what a sweetheart. She told us she was retiring in 4 months.

The only negative was, we were in a car that had not been refurbished.

Linda kept the car clean, I checked the restrooms a couple of times. The trashes were not overflowing! Amazing! She had fresh flowers in the restrooms. We just loved her.

Really enjoyed our bedroom, had some great table mates for all meals. Instead of using our room shower I used the larger one downstairs before bed.

At bedtime my mother and I both slept on the lower bunk in opposite directions, worked good and slept well.

We did get to be an hour late, from the conductor seemed to be mostly from freight traffic. Had a bit of a scare when the engine was misbehaving on a climb but it straighted out.

Again, as always, this is some of the most beautiful scenery. We were the first eastbound to go this route after the track work. Wasn't sure if we would have the detour or not.

Arrived in Denver about an hour late, told Linda goodbye and wished her a happy retirement. :)

Not sure when my next Amtrak trip will be but hopefully soon.

Thanks for your enjoyable trip report. Does make it difficult at dinner when your seatmates do not want to talk :) . Glad you had a good time in Reno. Looking forward to seeing the new Denver station in August.

Glad y'all had a good trip, thanks for sharing!

I had Linda a couple of times, as you said she is an excellent attendant! As the old timers retire hopefully they'll be replaced by well trained, hard working newbies!

You liked Reno? I'm in Reno right now, and it's been raining for days! This rarely happens here. Usually, we're very dry. I'm just not a big fan of Reno, but I've been to worse places.

Enjoyed your trip report very much. I loved the descriptions of your traveling with your mother--I went on many trips with my mother through the years, and I learned early that it was best (at least in minor things) to agree with her and not argue!
