    Los Angeles Union Station

I just got back from LA. We rode the Pacific Surfliner, Business Class. It was wonderful! TV behind every seat, free soda and snacks, free newspaper, attendants meeting your every need...wonderful! They have a route that goes to San Diego from Los Angeles along the coast line. The only small...

    January circle trip

The SL trip I took from NO to LA was good. I felt like a traveler on vacation. Everyone was all smiles. I really enjoyed it. We arrived in LA 6 hours late and the Pacific Surfliner was waiting for us. We jumped off one train and on the other! The bad part of the trip was LA to NO...

Restore Rail Service to Las Vegas

Thanks for the advise. I'll rent a car in Baton Rouge and drive to St Louis, catch the Ann Rutledge to Kansas City, catch the S/W Chief to Needles and rent a car from there to Las Vegas. It will be better than the Sunset Limited to LA. (If the SL would run everyday, I would consider taking it...

Restore Rail Service to Las Vegas

Why does the Sunset Limited go all the way to Los Angeles and then you take a bus back to Las Vegas? Why doesn't the bus start in El Paso or San Antonio and go straight to Vegas instead of backtracking?

    TV in Roomettes on Viewlinders

On our last trip from Louisiana to Los Angeles we took our portable DVD player. They are at Wal Mart from $139 to $189. Most have hook ups for two sets of headphones. WELL worth the money!!! :)

    Rail congestion gives Houston headaches

The only real beef I have is the long delays. Sometimes I would want the train to move so bad that I would look out of the window and hallucinate. "Are we moving?" Other people would say No, you're just imagining it! If the 2 hour stops can't be helped, then there is no other "real beef"...

    Rail congestion gives Houston headaches

OK. Since we have some Amtrak employees here, I have a stupid question. Why does the train pull into a station, stay for 10 minutes, yell "all aboard", rush everyone back in the train to pull 500 feet away and stop for 2 hours? Why didn't they just stay at the station where people could...

    Amtrak Crescent: The Poem

I loved your poem on the Sunset. Add a stanza to mention the Pecos River Bridge! Well, I was scared.

    Rail congestion gives Houston headaches

I remember the new conductor said the cook told him "to get down there." referring to our coach car because people were upset. I don't know what the time span was between waking up the cook and the cook talking to the conductor, or the time span between the conductor hearing this and coming to...

    Rail congestion gives Houston headaches

I wondered if the first crew got off of the train before the new crew got on the train. It doesn't seem like that would be right. Maybe there is a place in front of the train where they all congregated. Read my trip report and remember, I toned it down.

    Sunset Limited-

I started my trip on a Friday afternoon , October 15, from Lafayette, La. The Sunset Limited was to arrive at 3:37 pm. It was about 10 minutes late. Once the train pulled up, the attendant took our tickets and assigned us seats. We went into the coach car, placed our larger baggage at the...

    Rail congestion gives Houston headaches

The additional 2 hours were spent a few miles outside of Lafayette La. The train stopped at about 4 am. After sitting for an hour, passengers started wondering what was wrong. Passengers in coach started going through the train looking for an attendant. After finding NONE, they went into the...

    Sunset Back on Track

OK. I think I'm ready! I am getting more excited as the trip gets closer. Maybe I'll get enough stories to do a trip report when I get back. I'm expecting the SL to be on time this week, no matter what it has done in the past! :P

    Smoking

I will be going on the Sunset Limited from Louisiana to California and I am wondering about the smoking stops. Thanks for the info to call Amtrak. I was under the impression that the conductor just allowed smoke breaks at his choosing.

    First trip for a smoker

I will be taking my first trip from Lafayette La to Los Angeles on the Sunset Limited. I know smoking is banned on the train but have been told there are occassional opportunities to step off of the train and smoke. Does anyone have any more detail on what I can expect so I can try to be prepared?
