The dilemma faced by train schedulers is that everyone wants to have daylight arrival & departure times at 'their' cities. Throw in that in the pre-Amtrak days, the Silver Star and Silver Meteor followed the same route. Today, the Silver Star travels about a hundred miles MORE on routes that are inferior to the 'A' line traversed by the Silver Meteor ('S' line and Tampa and back). So, to keep the most passengers happy, keep NYP-WAS in daylight hours, and to keep all Florida stops in the daylight, the only choice is they closely follow one another south of Winterhaven. Would YOU want to get off the train in Miami at midnight?
