A rather nice report from the English traveler on the EB. He could have mentioned that the costs for the food were included in his room reservation. A great description of the scenery and the nice people you meet on a train. For those of us from AU, the main reasons why we ride the rails. . :p
 
Travelling any distance by train in the States is a lifestyle choice rather than a function of daily life.

One very small nit, since we are seaching for body lice in this article: Diesel locomotives don't "chug." Steam engines do.
 
The old GE "pooches" that Amtrak used (most often on the SL) certainly seemed to "chug".
 
After reading the article, I didn't think it was stated clearly enough that charges for sleeping accommodations had wide fluctuations - sometimes by a factor of 3X - so I threw in a plug for AmSnag.
