Only two days until our first rail trip-Cincinnati-Seattle. What is the best way to tip? At the end of the trip or as we go along? I thought it is better to tip daily or as we go along to insure good service. What do you think?

Thanx, Spot.

Usually most people tip about $5 a night for sleepers or $1 a night for coach at the end of the trip as you are detraining, and for each meal in the dining car tips go around $1-2. Remember if you feel the service did not meet or went above your expectations then you can tip more, less, or none. B)

One normally tips the waiters in the dining car for each meal. If you are in a sleeper, then most people leave a buck for breakfast and lunch, two for dinner and maybe more if you order liquor. If you are traveling coach, then tip like you would at any other restaurant.

As for the sleeping car attendant it kind of depends, usually 5 bucks a night is normal. That however depends on how many people are in the room, did he/she bring you meals, were they attentive, did they get your beds up and down in a timely manner, and other little things. If you are in coach, most people don’t tip the car attendant unless he/she was extraordinarily helpful.

Have a great trip! :)
