For quite some time I have been hearing about Amtrak having major sleeping car shortages. Did'nt they retire a ton of lightweight sleepers a few years ago? Could'nt these cars be rebuilt and upgraded at a fraction of the cost as a stop-gap until new equipment can be purchased at a future date? Just a thought.

I don't think that Amtrak has any of those left at this point. As far as I know, it's only Superliners, Viewliners and the crew dorms.

Even if they did have some old sleepers left, they have no money to put them back on the road. Pulling a car out of mothballs requires a fair amount of work and mandatory safety items & checks.
