Most of you will have heard of Sir Nigel Gresley, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER.

Among the most famous of his creations are the A4 class of streamlined Pacifics, the most famous of which is Mallard, holder of the world speed record for steam and among the most famous locomotives of all times.

Right now there is a project underway to erect a statue of the great man in the newly renovated London King's Cross station.

The original plan for the statue would have featured him with a mallard duck. His most famous locomotive was after all named after that species and he was an avid ornitologist and duck lover, so the connection is not inappropriate. Such a whimsical touch to the statue would furthermore give it a connection to the general public who would otherwise not take much notice of yet another statue of some dead guy most people haven't heard of.

Sadly, the people behind the project have made a U turn and decided to erect the statue without a duck.

If you feel as I do that this is a grave misjudgement, plese visit the campaign website for restoring the duck and sign the petition
