So, I booked a ticket for a friend on the chief WLO-LAX coach and then LAX-BUR. It was actually cheaper so we chose that level of services but he was booked into a lower level coach, which is less desirable to him. I called and was told it would be $30 to sit upstairs. Has anyone heard of anything like this? Should I call and ask for a supervisor as this doesn’t make sense.

They may be quoting the $30 as the price has increased by that much since you originally booked the ticket.

Make sure you ask to "modify" the reservation. Otherwise, they're simply pulling up a new reservation, and the price may be higher at this point (as @brianpmcdonnell17 mentioned).

When they modify the reservation, it holds your original price and simply changes your seat assignment.
