Hi All:

I just got my first e-ticket for a family trip between NYP and ROC on an Empire Service train, for me, my wife, and two young kids.

I'm not exactly optimistic that we'll all be able to set together when we leave NYP, which made me think; What happens if my wife and I need to, say, sit in separate cars? ( Obviously with at least one kid each )? Since we have just the one ticket to print out that has all four names on it, is there likely to be any issue if I print at least two copies? I.E. if the conductor scans my wife's first, will the system treat his scan of my copy later as a duplicate and flag it at already have been used?

Also, in regards to leaving NYP, from reading past postings on here, I'm under the impression that the best way to try to get seats together in NYP is to buttonhole a redcap before the train arrives, and he/she will escort us down to the platform before the much larger mass of other passengers get there, correct?

Thanks!

I'd print out two copies and give one to each. Then if you aren't together, and especially if you're not in the same car, you should each tell the conductor that your party is split up. The conductor can check in two people on the reservation, and then when they get to the other half of your family, they can check in that half. It could be the same conductor or it could be the other conductor. So letting them know ahead of time is the best solution. Let them work out the particulars.

And yes, the RedCap is a good way to get down early and get seats together.

The train leaving Penn Station will be on either tracks 5,6,7, or 8 (approximately) their the only ones that can access the Empire Connection to head up the Hudson to Rochester.

My trick for boarding in Penn Station is to go down to the Exit Concourse (one level beneath the main concourse) and use the stairs from there to go down to the track after it is annouced 15-20 minutes before, if a line has started at the proper gate. Just make sure you ask a conductor on the platform who will direct you to the right car that will be opened in Rochester.
