Looks like the best bang for the buck is Silver (30K Points for $1000)
BUT - membership excludes discounts on the sleeper cars and car-fees on the Auto Train, which is my main interest.
However, I'm assuming I can still use the points under AGR for booking Auto Train ?? - I'm a little confused.
Also - based on points-for-travel assessment I did on the Amtrak site, it looks like redemption is roughly 1 point = 2.9 cents
So you'd be paying about 3.3 cents to earn 2.9 cents (point-for-point) ??
Am I getting this right ?

You're mainly paying to provide financial support to the RPA and receiving some AGR points as a thank you in return. It's not intended as a practical method for turning cash into reduced cost travel.
