There's an article from the Boston Globe this past June that makes it look like the idea, if not dead, is certainly on life support:

The proposed one-year budget includes a new “winter resiliency plan” advanced by Governor Charlie Baker, and funding for the long-awaited Green Line extension into Medford and Somerville. But it also leaves out large amounts of money for projects the previous administration had pushed, such as self-propelled trains that would run on commuter rail tracks.

And here's another article which says similar: http://www.universalhub.com/2015/forget-about-subway-service-fairmount-line

The Herald reports the Baker administration has stopped plans to buy "diesel multiple unit" trains that would have allowed the Fairmount Line to run at subway-like frequencies, saying now's not the time to load up on new technologies on the T.
