This is way off topic Alan, but I have a new cell phone and I was wondering if it can be hooked up to a Laptop and receive the internet so when traveling I can write e-mails or send off trip reports as a trip progresses. B)

Well first off you would need a cellular modem for your laptop. Not a regular modem for typical land lines. It's a special modem designed to deal with the way a cell phone works. You also need to make sure that the modem you buy works properly with the cell phone model that you own. There are different modem's for different models of cell phone.
Plus some cell phone services won't let you use their service for a computer unless you sign up for data service and pay them an extra fee. Then you've got to have a signal for the phone, which can be tough while onboard a train. Plus you've got to be careful about roaming charges and/or using up all of your included minutes.
