Here is Amtrak's current fleet status provided by Gene Poon over at Trainorders. Thought it may be of some interest.

Amtrak Fleet Status Report, 21JAN03
NOTE: This list includes only those cars considered as "ACTIVE" by

Amtrak. It shows a situation that isn't good, but it is reality worse

than it appears.

As bad as some parts of this look, it does NOT include cars that

are wreck-damaged, or any cars that somebody doesn't consider "operable."

Sorry if the site's formatting results in the columns not lining up...that seems to be a part of using this forum.

O/S: Out of Service

PM: Periodic Maintenance.

Amfleet,

While it's not perfect, I've cleaned up the columns somewhat for you. This way it's a little more readable.

I hope you don't mind. :)

The list mentions NPCU's. Would I be right in assuming that means "Non-Powered Cab Unit" (or something similar) and that these are the F40s that had the guts taken out of them?

I was looking at the Amtrak West locomotive column where it says there are 17 CDTX locos with 1 O/S and 1 PM. Is it safe to say that there is a total od 17 with 1 out of service and one having preventative maintenance done, thus having 15 actual available. Correct me if I'm reading the chart wrong.

If i read more carefully I would have seen the answer to my question. Disregard my last post...

Wait a tick. If you look at the report and do the math things don't add up right. Look at the P-42's for example, it lists 178 active, 18 out of service and 8 in for PM, that's 204 in intercity alone. Now do the 178 active include the 18 out of service and the 8 in for PM? If t does that adds up to 198, which as far as I know only 3 have been junked, 149 and 146 (I think) and one other unit. Anyone know of others that have been junked?

Chief,

You didn't read the disclaimer at the top of Amfleet's post.

Ok, now I have to ask because I'm confused again. For what reasons is a car considered O/S and why would wreck damage not fall under that unless the wreck damaged cars were being written off.

battalion51 said:
But what about the O/S and PM cars, are those considered active?
Well based upon what I'm reading in Gene Poon's post, yes those cars are considered active. Again we can only go with what info Gene gave us, but it does appear that O/S and PM are active. Certainly any car in for PM should still be considered active.

Now I'm assuming that cars that are O/S are out for example, because the A/C failed. Not because they were wrecked.

Oh, so I should think of O/S cars more along the lines of something that might have been bad ordered for whatever reason. That would make some sense.

TP,

Yes, for the purposes of this list you should consider O/S as cars that were working and had some failure. Derailed cars and cars with catasrophic problems like a fire, would not be counted.

Pretty neat how I answered your question, without having even read it. :) My earlier response was really to answer Battalion51's question.

And they say that people can't read minds... :)

I'm confused too. I think active means none of that equipment is being leased and is on Amtrak property. So that list right there is the backbone of Amtrak. It amazes me how with so little Amtrak has been able to do so much.

Thanks for lining up the post Alan. :)

I belive "active" means it is in service...rather than waiting for maintenance, or under maintenance.

I based my thought on how things are tabulated using Amtrak California. There are currently 17 locomotives in the Amtrak CA fleet (15 F59PHI's 2001-2015, and two of the old Pepsi Cans 2051 and 2052). Currently the 2004 is on its way for P/M while I believe the 2009 is O/S. Not 100% sure on that but if I'm right the numbers match.

When a car is shown as "active", the car is in service and can be rotating thru different routes.

The cars rotate in and out of service for PM's and B/O repairs. Depending on where the car is serviced, when it is repaired and what consist needs a car determines what route it ends up in.

That's why you sometimes see ShoreLiner V/L's in Silver Service. It was available when the need was there.

Cars are not considered "active" during maintenance. Every morning, car count sheets are sent to Operations, which allows scheduling and allows them to know why a car is out of service.
