    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

Since they are being built in California and used first in Florida, would Rep. Denham and Mica steer Amtrak to buy any future short distance cars from Siemens, without running afoul of conflict of interest rules of course.

    April, 2016 Monthly Performance Report

This could be another topic, but could the current TSA caused delays at major airports make some people consider Amtrak? Perhaps this might be reflected in subsequent reports.

    Amtrak’s for-profit regulation

Perhaps it is finally time to recognize that Amtrak is, for all tense and purposes, one glorified national transit network and change the law to reflect that fact, thereby putting to rest once and for all the lie that it is "for profit".

    Long-Distance Train Schedule Performance

For those who simply advocate the government take over the tracks, where will this money come from? With 19 trillion dollars in debt and growing, The US doesn't have the money, unless we con the Chinese to buy them, which they may end up doing anyway.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

How many properties, if any, does FEC own in the vicinity of the Osborn Convention center AKA the old Jacksonville Terminal? I have seen plans of passenger rail service returning there. If so, could Brightline run the east coast section of one of Amtrak's Silver trains if and when they split at...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

In seeing renditions of the locomotives being built for the Brightline service, it seems that there is space under the front of the units before the lead truck. Will there be something there to deflect objects so that there will not be a derailment?

Dark days ahead for the Cardinal?

Since they plan to extend service from Lynchburg to Roanoke, maybe reroute the Cardinal over NS through Bluefield to CIN and onto Chicago on its present route. It would be neat for its first trip between Lynchburg and Radford to have 611 pull it!

Richmond Acca Yard Bypass by Spring 2018

Someone mentioned double tracking the bridge across the James. If you are talking about the A line, it is already double track, if I recall correctly. I believe you must mean the bridge over the Appomattox in Petersburg.

    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

Lest we forget, Donald Trump got his start as a real estate investor by acquiring properties from the bankrupt Penn Central estate. One was a rail yard on the west side of Manhatten that was developed for convention center use, I believe, as well as if I recall, the Commodore Hotel. One ray of...

Largest Metros Without Amtrak Service (How to Serve Them?)

With regards to Augusta, perhaps a daytime Palmetto style service would use the Silver Star route to Columbia then over to Augusta on NS, if a physical connection could be built between those lines. Another idea would be extending the Carolinian, provided the schedule could be tightened up enough.

Obama's proposed high-speed rail network stuck in station

Try not to paint all Republicans with such a broad brush. Trent Lott, Ray LaHood, and others come to mind, as do governors of VA, NC and other states. We need to be fair and recognize allies on both sides of the divide.

Crescent's Annual Truncation due to trackwork

Instead of alternative( I guess that means a bus ) transportation, could they reroute the Crescent over its original route via Montgomery and the Gulf Coast to NOL?

    Joe Boardman to Retire

Hopefully, another one with the caliber of a Graham Claytor or a David Gunn or some combination of those two. Whoever he or she is, the administration needs to back him or her up.

Amtrak’s Losses Widen in Fiscal 2015

There seems to be a part of this legislation that directs, or urges, I'm not sure which, Amtrak to put up to three routes up for bids for private operators to bid on. It also seems to encourage the states that sponsor corridor operations to do likewise. Besides Iowa Pacific, what other operators...

    Corridors for the future

What would be the likelihood that Gov. Rauner do what Indiana has done and let Iowa Pacific contract to operate this service?

What's the Wisdom of "Profitable Above the Rail"?

Given how expensive the NEC is, I wonder if it was a mistake for Amtrak to take it over. I have seen some opinion pieces that advocate that Amtrak divest itself of this infrastructure to an arm of the FRA that would treat it like the FAA does air traffic control. All user fees and state...

Revisiting Boston-Florida service/NEC to FL via Charlotte

On Seaboard92's proposed routing of the Silver Moon (I prefer resurrecting the name Silver Comet, but whatever the name), this adds one more daytime service to Lynchburg, which VA had been planning anyway. This would be a lucrative stop ridership wise

    Corridors for the future

Not meaning to sound off topic, but I wonder how much ROW there is that is under utilized or dormant that could be resurrected for this purpose? One example that comes to mind is the S line of CSX from Raleigh to Savannah, as well as north of Raleigh to Richmond, the subject of the SEHSR...

Why has bipartisan support for rail dwindled?

To get back on topic, there were two pieces of legislation that garnered bipartisan support. In the Senate there was a bill put forth to streamline the permitting process for railroads to add additional capacity. In the House, a bill that sets aside 5%, I believe, of tariff revenues, as I...

    Future Atlanta Service

I will agree with the others that SC's view is that rail means freight, period. Ditto GA. I also recall that some time ago, FEC was interested in buying a 30% stake in the NS line from Jacksonville to Macon, or Atlanta from NS the way NS has 30% holding in the KCS line from Meridian to...
