    Amtrak and United

I've earned AGR miles on United flights even without the codeshare; just drop your AGR number in when booking your flight and they pay 1 mile per mile flown. Don't know if it's a bug in the system, but I'm milking it as long as I can.

    Northeast Snowstorm

They're starting to cancel tomorrow AM's trains as well. I was scheduled to leave out of PHL tomorrow on 2100, and just got an email that it was canceled.

Increasing Service Between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh?

The biggest problem with any train from Tyrone to the State College area would be the line from Milesburg to Pleasant Gap. The line from Tyrone to Milesburg is actually one of the straightest, flattest pieces of track west of Harrisburg. Currently it's Class 3, but I'm sure you could get it to...

Renaming New York's Amtrak train station

You mean like Jefferson (Hospital) Station and AT&T Station in Philly? http://articles.philly.com/2014-09-08/news/53527754_1_pattison-station-septa-broad-street-subway

Amtrak's computers are whacky today (10/5/14)

Well, I just got back home and found this in my inbox, delivered about half an hour after I arrived at PHL: Only about 6 hours late. Now that's customer service!

Amtrak's computers are whacky today (10/5/14)

I think almost their entire system is down. I'm traveling BOS-PHL today, and no ticketing options worked. The lady at the ticket counter just printed me off a confirmation and said it would be good enough, since the conductors' handsets are down as well.

    Is Pennsylvania just...lame??

What part of Reading? My dad's from East Reading, and while I love going to the city every once in a while (Tack's cheesesteaks, soft pretzels from Bell Alley, and Crystal Palace hot dogs are some of my favorite foods), I can't imagine living there with the city in the condition it's in...

Great Dome was on the Adirondack over the weekend

It was opening weekend at Saratoga Springs racetrack. My guess is that Amtrak dressed up the Adirondack to impress the horse racing crowd.

    President Executive Orders

Worthy of note is that while there was unprecedented deficit spending during WWII, in 1956, the debt/GDP ratio was below where it is today and on a downward trend. In addition, 75% of the WWII debt was held by the American public. When that debt was paid back, it shocked the country with a...

Car hits Amtrak train in upstate New York

Talk about luck! If the P42 in Canada didn't fail, she would have run headlong into a passenger car instead of an unoccupied locomotive.

    Stations with curved platforms

Tyrone, PA is situated on a curve. It used to be in a wye, but the third track was taken out decades ago.

    Amtrak meal photos?

Before reading the rest of the post, I thought that was a picture of a prepackaged soft-bake cookie and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. But a pot pie? Never would have guessed that.

PennDOT to pay 100% of Keystone

The Keystones go from the most populous city in the state to the most politically-connected city in the state. Somehow, I don't think that the service will be allowed to end.

    Hoosier State in Jeopardy

Question: How often does the Hoosier State run without any additional cars from Beech Grove? I'm thinking that Amtrak might be able to argue before Congress that the Hoosier State serves as a "revenue deadhead" in that the train would have to run anyway to move cars from Chicago to Beech Grove...

    E-Ticketing/SEPTA Question

You are not guilty of fare evasion; it's the conductor's responsibility to collect advance-purchase tickets and sell onboard tickets. If he or she does not fulfill this duty, it's not my fault. Every time I take the "free transfer", I am fully willing to pay the $3.50 if the conductor comes by...

    A BAD Amtrak trip

Yes, but the OP did "pay" for sleeper accommodations, which includes meals. Low bucket on MSP-CHI for a roomette is $120; since they didn't receive any of the benefits of sleeper accommodations, the least they should get is a voucher for $120, or 4000 AGR points (the difference between 2...

    Which stations are smoking breaks?

I was on 11 about two weeks ago, and the crew made it very clear that SJC was not to be a smoking stop. I can recall it being announced 3x over the PA, and my SCA mentioned something about it when I was getting off to walk around.

    bedroom suite

All that Amtrak does to make a "bedroom suite" is open the divider between two adjoining bedrooms (C&B or D&E). You still pay 2x the bedroom price, and 6 will pretty much only fit in a "day" arrangement (2 ppl on each bunk, and one on each seat opposite the bunk). The third person in each room...

    NEC and Carolinian and DC

The general rule is that as long as you can carry it yourself, and it fits either in the overhead racks (much bigger than airline racks) or in the storage bins at the end of the car, you'll be fine. Since the Keystone doesn't have a baggage car, they won't be allowed to check bags in ALX. The...
