    First Train Ride

My first ride I remember was between LA and Phoenix. Probably SP or Santa Fe. I remember we had a flat wheel on the locomotive and sat in the desert with no air for hours.

    Speed

Taking my grandson (8 years old and first train ride) from Flint to Chicago next month. What is the top speed of 365 and 364? Where does it reach this speed.

    Wilmington

Not sure what day we're going. Do I need to purchase tickets in advance or can I just go to a ticket counter and get them? What time would be a good time to go so we miss most of the rush? Leaving from DC and returning the same day. Thank you.

    Wilmington

Thanks. Some good suggestions and I appreciate it. We will be going on a weekday so maybe we'll get off for an hour or so. Thanks again.

    Wilmington

My wife has never been to Delaware. In the fall, we're taking the train from DC to Philly for the day. I know the train stops in Wilmington. Does it stop long enough to get off for a minute? Are you allowed to get off if you don't leave the platform? Thanks in advance.

City of New Orleans in January

I like to keep my bags in the racks. Have not needed anything but I like to be able to get to them in case. Having said that, on our way home from an Alaskan cruise, we UPSd our big suitcases home and took the train from Seattle to Chicago. Dropped them off at the UPS store and the guy delivered...

What has been your longest trip on amtrak? With and without Breaks

Longest without breaks, East Lansing to Chicago and Chicago to Seattle on the Pioneer. Longest with breaks, East Lansing to Chicago, Chicago to Seattle (EB), Seattle to Vancouver, BC, and return to East Lansing. Can throw the Yukon and White Pass during that trip too.

Is there any way, by rail, to get from Vancouver, BC, to Anchorage, Alaska? I HATE to fly and will not fly except in EXTREME emergencies. Thanks.

    What's your favorite train station?

No longer used by Amtrak, obviously. However, my favorite train station is the Michigan Central depot in Detroit. All too well I remember it when it was a glorious station. Even now I can't help driving by it when I am in Detroit.

    Chicago to East Lansing Amtrak

I see no problem for a single female traveler going to East Lansing. Usually, there is a pretty good crowd on that train and lots of people get off there. The station is across the street from the Michigan State campus so there is lots of traffic in the area. Taxis should not be a problem if so...

    Nook on a train.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm leaning towards Nook because of the color display. As of now, no color on Kindle. I have played with both and I like Nook better. That being said, I'm pretty sure I'd love Nook(ie) on a train too. I'm sure it works well.

    Nook on a train.

Notice I said Nook, as in the Nook you buy at Barnes and Noble. Does the web browser work well on a train? I understand they use cell phone technology so they should, but I just wonder if there are any users out there who have personal knowledge. I don't own one yet but I am leaning that way...

    Scanner

I know a person can listen to the radio over the net. I know you can watch some TV shows over the net. Is there a site you can go to so that you can listen to Amtrak trains over the net? Like a scanner site? Anything?
