Six hours possibly in Washington D.C.&NYC

Also in DC and walking distance from Union Station are The National Archives, the SPY Museum, and The National Building Museum. For a great and cheap lunch, hit up one of the street corner hot dog vendors for a couple of Half -smokes with chili! mmmmm

The OBS Chief reports to the Conductor, but..

. On long distance trains, the operating crew, especially in the middle portion where the major 'lift' of tickets has already been accomplished, often seems to be little more than "along for the ride, in case something happens".... Along for the ride... that's funny right there!

    New Orleans to New York

There is also a tunnel just North of Lynchburg Va. But this time of year it's dark outside when the train passes through it, so it hard to notice.

How did Amtrak shake out an extra sleeper for the Cardinal?

A daily Cardinal is a long way off. Even if all of the other conditions were met, Amtrak does not have enough qualified crew members to operate the train between Huntington WV and Charlottesville Va. The length of the run requires 2 engineers in the cab. With the current schedule, each crew...

Dining car recommended tipping and Amtrak personnel

Please please, tell your Amtrak server who has been away from home for several days and worked 3 meal periods per day that you are not tipping them because you think they are making enough money. That way they wont't think you are a cheapskate... just uncaring.

Dining car recommended tipping and Amtrak personnel

A tip should be based on the service that you received. You shouldn't tip more because you believe a server is making minimum wage or less because you think the server is well compensated.

    Onboard the Cardinal 51(4)

Because of the schedule,an engineer qualifying on the Cardinal can only make 3 one-way trips per week. There is a lot of mileage to cover and in winter months, a good portion of the westward trip is in darkness.

    Onboard the Cardinal 51(4)

Depends on how long of a run. The Cardinal uses 1 engineer between Washington and Charlottesville and 2 are required between Charlottesville and Huntington.

    Onboard the Cardinal 51(4)

Also, more crews would be needed. It takes almost 2 years for an engineer to become qualified between Charlottesville Va. and Huntington WV.

Private Car in Washington Union Station

The private car "Cannonball" has been sitting on track 9 in Washington Union Station since before National Train Day. The car appears to be un-occupied and there is some damage on the A end of the car. The damage does not seem to be significant enough to prevent the car from moving. Does...

Can You Buy Two Seats For Yourself?

I dont have access to the book at this moment. I will look it up when I get a chance.

Can You Buy Two Seats For Yourself?

Your best bet would be to purchase a room. Amtrak's Service Standards Manual says that a passenger cannot buy two seats to avoid having someone sit next to them.

    Odd consist for the Cardinal.

There is 1 coach attendant between WAS and CHI. None between NYP and WAS

    Odd consist for the Cardinal.

Thats gonna be harder to do now. If you have one conductor working the baggage car, its going to take awhile to get to all of the doors.

    Odd consist for the Cardinal.

Rumor is that the order to change the consist came from Indy. No idea why it would matter to them. This makes it difficult to work the train at stops with short platforms. Even at Charlottesville which has a long platform, there was some confusion yesterday as 8 passengers were boarded in the...

    Odd consist for the Cardinal.

The set of equipment that came in as train 50 last night will be set up this way too when it comes out as 51 tomorrow.

    Odd consist for the Cardinal.

Nope. One of the coaches was ahead of the cafe and two were behind it.

Pretty terrible record lately for northbound Crescent

Norfolk Southern is using the Auto-Router and it hasn't been the most efficient way to dispatch trains.

    Odd consist for the Cardinal.

There is a very strong rumor floating about that says tomorrow's Cardinal (51) will have and unusual configuration. They say the consist will have a baggage car behind the locomotive, followed by the viewliner sleeper, then a coach, then the diner lite, and finally 2 more coaches. Its gonna be...
