    Seatmate Stories

Devil's Advocate first brought up creepy seatmates and people you might have to sit by in the now locked "Two seats for one person" thread, so that prompted me to start a new thread about seatmates whether they were weird, creepy, rude, smelly, annoying, interesting or anything else you want to...

What will the rest of 2014 bring for Amtrak?

So I think 2014 will be an interesting year. Obama announced his big transportation bill that , if I recall, has quite a bit of $$$ for Amtrak. The elections will be interesting. Democrats are generally more Amtrak friendly and if they take back the House, that could bring something good.

    Trains Mag "Corridor Crisis" Article

There is a great NEC article in the Trains Magazine April 2014 issue. It goes in depth on what needs to be upgraded on the corridor to make sure it handle future expansions and other stuff like that. It is a great read.

Crude Oil on the CZ route in Utah.

Recent pics show crude oil trains on the former D&RGW in Utah. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=464860&nseq=0 http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=435039&nseq=4 I do not think we are looking at any real problems here since oil is not produced in Utah, just something worth...

    New Platforms Needed at....

My hometown's (Winona,MN) Amtrak platform is an old, cracking, and crumbling piece of sad asphalt. That got me thinking, what other stations beside mine need a new platform?

Empire Builder: we took a different route through the Twin Cities

I was on today's eastbound EB going home to Winona from skiing in Montana. When in the twin cities, instead of going the normal route (BNSF Midway Sub/MNNR A yard to Midway), we went on the St. Paul Sub, then down on the MNNR industrial "mainline", onto to Midway Sub for a short distance, then...

Tis the season: Favorite Winter Train Rides, Not limited to Amtrak.

Winter is a great season for train riding. It is also a popular season for train riding. For many people, including myself, it is their favorite season to take a ride on Amtrak or a tourist railroad. So, lets talk about our favorite trains to ride in the winter, not just Amtrak. My favorite...

    GE Genesis Replacement possibilities.

I know it is a few years away but I think this is a worthy discussion. What might replace the Genesis? I know EMD has stated that their new F125 will meet Amtrak standards, so that could be a possibility. Thoughts?

Best sounding horns amtrak has used. Open for debate!

What are your opinions on the best sounding horn type that Amtrak has used over the years? My top two are the K5LA and a close second is the Nathan P01235 on the E60s

    ACS-64 nickname: got any ideas?

To continue the tradition of nicknaming Amtrak locos, What should we nickname the ACS-64? Maybe if the AEM-7 was a Swedish Meatball, the ACS-64 can be a German Bratwurst. :giggle:

2015 PTC Mandate: Possibility of higher speeds across the system

Does anyone think we will see 90 mph top speeds (track permitting) for more trains across the entire Amtrak system with the PTC mandate coming in December 2015, maybe just in flatter areas? I know crossing gates would have to be re-timed and freight RRs would have to agree, but other than that I...

    Electrification Harrisburg-Pittsburgh: could it happen?

What do you guys think about the ongoing project studying electrification to Pittsburgh? I am not sure NS would allow it, but I want to hear other opinions.

What happened to the Heartland Flyer High level coaches?

I am not sure if this has been discussed, but what happened to those last few high level coaches that were used on the heartland flyer until 2007? Did Amtrak scrap them?
