Bit of An Engine Hiccup for Amtrak #6(16)

Is this the reason the #5 is over 10 hours behind now?

Amtrak Diner Car/Cafe Car Menu HACKS!!

Anyone who has traveled enough on Amtrak has their favorite ways to maximize the amount of food they get served for the least amount of money....Or maybe asking for unusual ingredients to be added to their breakfast/lunch/dinner. My personal favorite was to ask for things of honey from...

    Amtrak Half Roasted Chicken Replaced

As far as I've seen on the new menus, yes, they are charging roughly the same amount for the new dish with less chicken.

Amtrak To Run Coachella "Party Train" in 2017 and 2018

Yeah, I've never had that problem being that I live in San Diego....Good to know they add extra cars during that time. Still....there are a ton of people I met who came down from LA because flying into SD can add a few hundred to any given plane ticket from anywhere in the country/world. I did...

    Cardinal Diner Hours

If you're riding coach...Best thing is to just ask as soon as the train pulls away from the station. If they blow off your question saying sleeper passengers only or "we'll get to coach passengers soon" go back and ask again 30 min later. Squeaky wheel gets the oil.

What is the best side (odd or even numbers) for a roomette?

There is a way to fix this. Wait until you get on the train and it pulls from the station. Then, if you're on a side you don't want, you can ask your Sleeping car attendant if there's going to be anyone coming along who is going to be occupying the room you want. Chances are there won't be...

    Chicago Metropolitan Lounge

This is what the lady at the ML told me as well. I had arrived in a sleeper on the SWC, but was leaving on the CL in coach.....She said they would not allow this past such and such date. (Guessing that's the date the new ML opens) Does this newly restrictive policy mean that they'll start...

    Amtrak Half Roasted Chicken Replaced

Personally, I always enjoyed getting the half chicken. I'm not a big guy. (Pretty skinny actually) I appreciated and needed the extra calories that dish provided. Now they chopped 500 calories off the dish. Was this the reason for them getting rid of it? To bring the calorie count down?

Amtrak To Run Coachella "Party Train" in 2017 and 2018

Why not run a special for all LD trains going to LAX and then onto SAN for the International Comic Con every year? There's just as many of us geeks out there who go there every year and we tend to spend a ton more money than Coachella could ever dream of.

    Long Distance Train Comfort Opinions

If I was one of those people who could sleep in a chair, I'd probably take coach for any trip that runs overnight. Probably one of the reason why I can never EVER sleep on a plane or in a car for more than 15 minutes without waking up. Roomettes and Bedrooms offer me the ability to lie down...

    Route Nicknames

I asked my SCA this question on my latest trip and her said "Oh man, I've heard some REALLY good ones I'm not supposed to say" but she did tell me a few ones. I called out different train routes to her & asked her to say the first thing that came to mind, nickname or not. Auto Train - The...

    Capitol Limited Dining

Strange....I arrived about 3hrs off the SWC to Chicago and when I went into the lounge, they didn't take my reservation...Had to do it once I got on the CL. And while I was seated promptly (I took the later dinner), I was seated with a family of 3 who didn't speak a word of English. (Made for...

    2 Roomettes or 1 Bedroom

So technically, they get 2x the number of meals, yeah? (Probably not, but it's fun to think about)

Let's say you forgot to tip your sleeping car attendant

I've tipped before AND after many times....Either I'm just exceedingly lucky that the level of service was always top notch, or maybe because I tipped ahead of time, that may have made the level of service I would have otherwise received just that much better. YMMV, of course.

Ever order a pizza while enroute to the next station?

I'm pleased to see this thread keep going on like this....I'm totally going to order a pizza in Albuquerque. (Least margin for error given the time spent there)

Let's say you forgot to tip your sleeping car attendant

To be honest, I usually tip my SCA well ahead of our final destination once I see the level of service that I'm getting. I even threw in an extra 20 last time I rode the SWC just to be woken up or alerted to every stop where I could step out for a minute or two and have a quick smoke. (Yes...

Ever order a pizza while enroute to the next station?

I'm more or less thinking about the stops where there's two times listed on the timetable. (eg. ABQ on the SWC, etc)

Ever order a pizza while enroute to the next station?

Seems to me with a little planning, one could easily pull off a Papa John's (et al) delivery if you know how long it'll take the train to get to the next station and call ahead accordingly. Just hop off the train while others pax are boarding, etc, pay for the pizza and there you go! Dinner...
