    Silver Star vs. Silver Meteor

Thanks everyone.... I guess I'll go for the Meteor for the obvious reason of the diner.

    Silver Star vs. Silver Meteor

This question has probably been asked a million times...but on a trip from Chicago to Miami in February is there a general preference for one over the other?

Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

Thank you...... I will definitely keep that in mind.

Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

That explains it, thank you. So there is still an outside chance it will be fixed by the 7th. Alternative is driving the Coast from L.A. to Seattle, which I've done before and really wouldn't mind doing again . After all, still have the E.B. to take home from there.

Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

Amtrak called to tell me my May 8 L.A. to Seattle trip has been cancelled. I see there was a landslide between Portland and Seattle but only a 48 hours rail closing because of it. Amtrak Customer Service tells me my trip was cancelled even tho almost 2 weeks away because they might still be...

    Chicago's new Metropolitan Lounge Information

Am I the only one who will miss the old Metropolitan? It always represented the beginning of the adventure.

David Baldacci - The Christmas Train

Thank you Chaz, you did it for me. I don't know what year Amtrak entirely discontinued smoking but a "smoking lounge" on lower level of lounge car is mentioned in the book...which was written 2004. I'm sure many of you know what year all smoking was made illegal......????

David Baldacci - The Christmas Train

I am halfway through this novel, and loving it! It's about a trip from D.C. on the Limited to L.A. on the Chief. I'd have to say the author actually rode both trains because the facts and descriptions of both are pretty accurate.....so far. Who else has read this?

Booking Roomette - how do I know which side I'll be on?

I too am picky about my roomette.....I much prefer to face forward with the window to my left. One would guess that I would have a 50/50 chance of this everytime I board a new train, but out of the last 6 trips, only once did I get my preference!.....pure bad luck. I have never been on the...

    Vermonter derailment 2015-10-05

Anyone have any idea how the engine will be raised? Is there such a thing as a crane that moves on tracks?

    Old Amtrak table set up

When we were touring the dining car last week at the Railway Museum, the docent noticed us talking about the Amtrak place setting. At just that moment, he pointed out the window and said "there goes the eastbound Zephyr right now." We said we will be riding it ourselves on Friday, and he said...

    Chicago to Miami

I have been following the thread about the Silvers and I wouldn't plan this trip until after the diner experiment is over.......I especially wouldn't "waste" points on a trip with no food!

    Old Amtrak table set up

I was just at the Railroad Museum in Sacramento last week.....I saw many old place settings, but I don't remember seeing this "couple." This must be a different museum......

    Interesting ideas, guys!

    Chicago to Miami

Trying to switch to the Star after arriving early enough is a good idea.....nothing to lose!

    Chicago to Miami

I was going to keep the 2 legs separate and only use points on viewliner bedroom.

    Chicago to Miami

I guess that definitely answers the question......I couldn't take the chance.

    Chicago to Miami

Amtrak guarantees the connection from the Capitol Limited arriving in DC at 1:05 to the Silver Meteor leaving at 7:35......but I'm thinking of "living dangerously" and choosing the Silver Star instead, leaving exactly 2 hours after DC arrival. On-time performance shows odds are in my favor for...

    Same Train?

Here's another question along the same line. Is the entire set configuaration likely to stay the same as it is "wyed" to the other direction? In other words, if one was to take the Chief round trip the same day and had the same roomette number, would she be seeing scenery on the opposite side...

    Same Train?

Yes it does.....I didn't mean to say 10pm.....have ridden both Eagle and Chief many times and do know departure times. Have just never thought about whether the same Chief turned around the same day.
