Just for fun - upper or lower?

We are in our mid 60s and have done 3 long distance trips. Next Coming up in May, Pere Marquette, then CONO. Past trips I’ve always been on the upper in both roomette and bedroom. This upcoming trip we booked 2 roomettes. I choose not to have to climb up and down at this age. Hubs can’t...

Bomb threat delayed train & I'll miss connection. What do I do

We were over 8 hours late coming into CUS from Albuquerque 2 year ago. We were told to all go to Customer Service in the station. We had only a small group from West MI, only 3 of us. Amtrak had a group of white shuttle buses ready for many people. Within a half hour the 3 of us were on our...

July 12-13: Chicago to New Orleans

Thanks Sarah. We sat on the west side both directions, so I loved seeing your photos from the other side. We were in NOLA for less than 48hours before returning to Chicago, so someday we will return. I can always wish for a bedroom, and not a roomette.

    New Orleans Amtrak Station Area

We were also asked if we minded sharing a cab to the French Quarter. I sat in the front and hubby sat in the back with a single guy. He was dropped off first, and then we were driven to the Hotel Provincial. Our fare was $8 for both of us. We gave the cabbie a $10.

Dinner on City of New Orleans?

We took the CONO in May. We left on time. Our SCA said nothing about dinner, so we walked to the dining car. Staff was sitting around, so we returned to our roomette. The announcement for dinner wasn't made until 45 minutes south of Chicago. We also had a limited menu to pick from. The wait...

Pere Marquette stuck in snow drift -pics from passenger

Saw a new sign at the old station Overflow parking lot. Big Blue sign said "Mega Bus Stop". Not sure if the stop would be in the overflow lot or at the station across the street, but definitely was a brand new sign.

Pere Marquette stuck in snow drift -pics from passenger

Drove past the new station last Sunday. Tracks are in, but white rocks still needed to be smoothed out in spots. 3 big pallets of left over railroad ties alongside the new depot. Station looks all completed. I believe the parking lot had its second paving coat. No media information, not...

West MI to New Orleans May 13-17, 2014

Forgot to add this fun tidbit. On our arrival into NOLA, we exited to the Taxi line. We were directed into a cab already occupied with one gentlemen. Thought that was a bit strange, but went with it. The cab driver had to be 80 years of age or older. Hubby offered to lift our 2 suitcases...

West MI to New Orleans May 13-17, 2014

Return to Chicago was on Friday the 16th. We took a taxi from our hotel back to the Amtrak Station. Arrived in time to get two of the "pulpit" chairs in the lounge but not the red couch. Time went quickly and soon we were escorted out to the train. Seems to have been some type of employee mix...

West MI to New Orleans May 13-17, 2014

Will post in installments as my memory isn't the best anymore. I tried to keep a notebook with up to date notes, but that lasted only the first day. We arrived at the Grand Rapids Pere Marquette train station around 7AM on the 13th. There was plenty of parking so we knew that the train would...

    Here in CUS Metropolitan Lounge

Here we are in the Metropolitan lounge spending a few hours waiting for the CONO. The Amtrak staff just fenced off the section close to the sliding exit doors. They stuck a hand made sigh on it which says, "Pullman Group only please". It will be wonderful to see the Pullman cars later this evening.

    CUS Madison Street Entrance

After 2 previous wet cold walks from CUS to Ogilvie T.C. I just discovered that there is a entrance to Union Station on Madison Street! Does anyone have any knowledge on how easy this would be to use & how would someone find the correct route? We come in via the Pere Marquette, so I really...

Pere Marquette stuck in snow drift -pics from passenger

yes, I also have tried to find other updates and no information is available. We have driven by the new station about every couple of weeks and have enjoyed watching the progress. Lights are on inside and the seating area is in. Signs are up and the big outdoor clock is functioning. We...

Food service available in New Orleans

I am in the midst of planning our May trip to NOLA. On our departure day, my current plan is to visit one of the grocery stores within walking distance to our Hotel prior to checking out. Possibly the Venti Mart, since it is close to the Hotel where we are staying. I have no problem with...

Don't forget that we also get to board early from the Metropolitan Lounge and as I understand, dinner reservations can start before the train even leaves Chicago.

    Additional Wolverines During Holiday Season

We've been following the construction of the new Grand Rapids terminal, as we drive by it frequently. Right now workers are constructing the new train tracks alongside the building next to the highway (US 131). We leave GRR May 13 for New Orleans. Hopefully the new station will be open by...

    Animals on AMTRAK

We had a service dog in our car the last trip we took. I noticed the beautiful golden retriever already in the Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago. It appeared to be a father/daughter travelling together. The daughter appeared to have M.S. but was able to walk, altho quite unsteady. They were pre...
