Michigan Service 355 derailment in New Buffalo, MI

I feel like there not that many Railroads in the country and there should be a national emergency line for these types of calls. I work in the general area and we were talking about the derailment at work. One of my colleagues at work was like, I should put the emergency number in my phone in...

Michigan Service 355 derailment in New Buffalo, MI

The police were apparently on the scene already directing traffic since the truck had been stuck on the grade crossing for 45 minutes. I assume something like a police dispatcher tried to call the railroad. Something about this crash in particular just feels so preventable.

Michigan Service 355 derailment in New Buffalo, MI

I live relatively close to the area and deep in a random facebook restaurant supposedly the local PD who were already on scene called CSX (which has a crossing nearby of the same road on the line used by the Pere Marquette) but no one bothered to call Amtrak! Also I'm curious is the number to...

Scenic routes on LIRR to the far east end of Long Island?

In Bridgeport there are staircases up to the platforms (it's at all clear from the arial map), that are a very short distance down the warf from the dock (this sign greats you shortly after you get off the ferry) See the Bridgeport Page of my website, these photos: 15, 16 do a good job showing...

    Empire Service suspension 11/12/23

Grand Central has plenty of track capacity! I remember back in 2003 when the lift bridge went out they rerouted Amtrak into it within ! day, why can't that happen today.

Polar Express train at Chicago Union Station

I know back in 2016, Amtrak also operated (chartered by the same events company) one in New Orleans. Took the City of New Orleans from a Polar Express display in Chicago to one in New Orleans.

College football fans reserve entire Amtrak coach

The South Shore Line (when it's not being partially busituted) has booster clubs that charter entire trains for trips from Chicago to South Bend for Notre Dame home football games. An open bar on the train is normally part or the package (that are in the $100s just for the round-trip train ticket)

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

I know that overcrowding wasn't the only issue for why Pacific Surfliner tickets no longer get access to the Metropolitan Lounge. LOSSAN, the joint powers authority that operates the Surfliner, paid Amtrak for Surfliner Buissiness Class customers to access the Metropolitan Lounge and the...

I remember when I road the Canadian back in 2012 Lights stayed on in the coach dome, were off in the only Sleeper (Parc Car) Dome (I rode the Canadian in March).

Man blowing whistle as inbound train approaches

Not always, on a recent trip on the Silver Star at Raliegh a bunch of us nearly got left behind when the crew paid no attention and just started closing doors to the coaches, no double whistle, no call of All Aboard. It was strange, my sleeping car attendant was worried about me as I walked...

    Open Sleeper ticket

I just booked an open Sleeper Ticket. I got a competent but new (she said she started in December) agent, said she had never heard of paper value tickets and was able to issue me an eTicket as an open sleeper. Here's (redacted reservation information) what they look like (personal information...

    South Bend now unstaffed

I need to book an open sleeper ticket to join a friend on a pre-purchased roomette in a couple of weeks. I thought it would be easier to just go my local Amtrak station, South Bend, where at least pre-pandemic the normal agent was super knowlegable, instead of dealing with Amtrak's phone tree...

How much of the Amtrak map has one covered?

Thanks for sharing the Wikipedia article stating that it was suspended on March 19, 2011. I spent a lot of time traveling riding trains in British Columbia in September-October 2011, did a full circle North Vancouver-Whistler-Quesnel-Jasper Bus tour down to Banff-Kamloops-Vancouver Rocky...

Is Multi-City booking gone on Amtrak.com?

It hasn't been this way for ages if your stopovers were less than 24 hours, this only used to happen if your stopover was more than 24 hours. It used to be if you were stopping over for less than 24 hours (the route needed more than 1 train a day) the stopover used to be free! I can think of...

Is Multi-City booking gone on Amtrak.com?

Bumping this thread because it appears that this definitely hasn't been fixed, and I'm finally considering some Amtrak trips with short layovers to get more content for my website SubwayNut.com and am feeling disappointed. Has anyone tried to book a multi-city ticket with a less than 24 hour...

    Maple Leaf border check

Missing from you're Adirondack boarder description (I think, my main memory was in 2008): US-bound anyone without a US or Canadian passport was sent to the cafe care for further processing. Canada didn't due to this and I remember a British man being taken off the train by CBSA (saying I was...

Adirondack June '23 cancellation, and September restoration, state of Upstate NY service

Yah my last trip on the Adirondack was in February 2016 going northbound I'm pretty sure I had a seat mate the who way with two full Amfleet II coaches. Southbound my trick would be to get off in Yonkers (I used to live in Northern Manhattan). I still remember when I first took the Adirondack...

    Capitol Limited discussion

Also the Capitol Limited has two coaches tonight. Found out when they announced that the restrooms in one of them are broken.

    Capitol Limited discussion

Thanks it did! Well we lost 13 minutes departing Chicago. So not too bad. The lower level seats are empty and quiet with maybe 5 of us total (at least a couple others going to South Bend)

    Capitol Limited discussion

I just boarded the Capitol Limited in Chicago around 5:00pm when I was feeling peopled out at my conference I checked the app. The 5:50pm Wolverine was sold-out. The Capitol Limited had released some lower-level seats and I was able to book one, never been so happy to pay the high bucket $38...
