Philly overnight to Jacksonville to board a cruise - is it very risky?

I report, you decide. On Sun., 8/14-Mon., 8/15 Meteor trip, my train was 3:10 late arriving JAX and 2:58 late arriving PAK. Reason? Signal problems north of Washington (unavoidable), and delay due to waiting for a replacement crew at Fredericsburg (avoidable). I would allow an extra day for...

    My Trip to Saratoga

I just got back from a 4-leg trip from Palatka, Fl to Saratoga Springs, NY in a roomette on 98/97. The only leg that went off without a hitch was on the Ethan Allan on Tues., 8/9. Questions about the Ethan Allan - Is it considered a long distance train, a regional train, or a state-subsidized...

Dinner in your room, or "Room Service!"

I would tip $5 on a $20 meal and, yes, tip for each meal delivered plus a single tip for the "trip" service - $5 per night per person.

    Mileage for the Silver Service

The Silver Star arrives in Tampa (both directions) using the Neve Wye, pictured here: http://wikimapia.org/13596889/Neve-Wye Probably adds around 4 miles to the mileage.

Best side for view on Silver Meteor

Has that always been the case? The reason I ask is that back in August, 2011, I was traveling alone NYP-PAK and was ASSIGNED an unsatisfactory aisle seat right in the middle of a rather large and boistrous family. Had to cajole the assistant conductor to get a window seat a little further...

    Trains and Locomotives show

A long time ago, it was on Sat. mornings on DirecTV, but now it seems to be relegated to 4:00 am or so. I'll have to recheck the RFDTV listings, I guess, to see if it's now on Monday afternoons like RalphCT said.

    Storm on NEC 2/3

Here's how the NE snowstorm affected us today. View from my pasture at about 3:00 this afternoon, temperature 81F (above!). Sorry to all my northern friends.

    Another Amtrak / Car Collision

Right; the media need to come up with another way of describing crossing accidents as something other than "collisions." Technically, of course, they are, but someone should invent another word that puts the onus squarely on the rubber-tired vehicle that caused it.

Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman named Railroader of the Year

Funny, when you go to their site, all you see is references extolling the virtues of America's FREIGHT railroads; looks like Amtrak is the ******* child of the family at the dinner table, but then I'd expect that.

Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman named Railroader of the Year

Sorry for the brain fart; I guess I meant Class i FREIGHTS, and I guess I meant to include the word "RECENTLY." Anyway, it's still a great accomplishment. Being that it's a Class I, by the way, is Amtrak then a member of the Association of American Railroads?

Tis the season: Favorite Winter Train Rides, Not limited to Amtrak.

Hate to be flip, but make sure the crew is well rested, please!

Tis the season: Favorite Winter Train Rides, Not limited to Amtrak.

Right around this time of year back in 1966, I came home on leave from Korea to arrange for my wife to come over at my expense for the remainder of my tour there. It was necessary for us to go to the Korean Consulate in San Francisco to obtain a visa for her. As she was living with her...

Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman named Railroader of the Year

That is excellent news. Has the award ever been given to someone not connected to the Class I's?

Hello from the bus! FTL to JAX to NYP Silver Service 92

A rainy trip through the Sunshine State, at least the western side. Maybe it's better up I95 for you.

Where Not to Eat in Penn Station

New York Pizza Suprema is excellent; just outside the station proper.

Friday Night Stories: Your Favorite Trip?

How about pre-Amtrak? My favorite trip of all time took place around 1948 when I was a six-year old lad taking his first LD train trip from New York to Lewiston, ME with my mother to visit our relatives up there. Left GCT on The State of Maine Express at 9:00 at night in coach, mind you, and...

    Name That Station!

Looks like Ticonderoga, NY (with some work in progress). If I'm correct, I defer on posting to anyone else who has a picture.
