Heat related speed restriction and CWR management

Many (most?) Indian Railways lines have a maximum axle loading that is considerably less than in the U.S.

    A-line Detours 5/26/2019

92 finally departed 3 hrs 49 mins late and lost more time RGH-RMT, departing RMT 5 hrs 27 mins late. 80's status unclear.

    A-line Detours 5/26/2019

Looks like 92 is being held at RGH this morning. Amtrak says 80 will originate from RGH. I wonder if NCDOT ran its own 79 RGH-CLT last night and its own 80 CLT-RGH this morning.

Richmond, VA Track Work June 10-12, 2018

"No alternate transportation" has become the norm for Amtrak.

    Positioning by NARP/RPA on LDs

    > The LDs also effectively serve many many overlapping 300-500 mile corridors. I suppose we could quarrel about the word "effectively". One or two trains a day that often run hours late because the trains travel 800+ miles is not very effective in my book. Clearly the LD trains have on/off at...

    Positioning by NARP/RPA on LDs

Perhaps, but the amount of money required to triple the frequency on every existing LD run would be huge. Don't hold your breath on that. And more passenger trains would worsen the OTP problem unless billions are thrown at the host railroads for additional capacity over very long stretches of track.

    Positioning by NARP/RPA on LDs

I find it fascinating that in the April 25, 2018 blog at railpassengers.org, the writer says "We support growing service along densely-populated corridors, but insist it must happen in addition to National Network service, not at the expense of rural and small town passengers." The thrust of...

    Expect Delays around Savannah

52 did stop for a while in Raleigh, two spottings on the too-short platform, and items were seen being taken on and off. I don't know about engine fuel, however.

    Expect Delays around Savannah

98, having cleared the S-line and the H-line, was almost 7 hours late leaving Rocky Mount. 92 is approaching Cary. I assume 52 is still trailing it, although the real-time tracking from 52's locomotive stopped in South Carolina. This would make 52 many hours late. 97 was reported between Selma...

    Expect Delays around Savannah

You mean Georgia 21. This is the area north of Central Jct (and north of the Amtrak station) where the ex-ACL and ex-SAL main lines are only a few hundred yards apart, running roughly parallel until they diverge several miles north.

    New Piedmont Roundtrip

"Substantial" is a mild word! Although the track is welded rail that Southern installed in the 1970s after acquiring the original Norfolk Southern, it has received virtually no maintenance in decades. It's dark. The western half of it is curvy. Trains would have to do a backup move at Raleigh's...

    New Piedmont Roundtrip

People in north Raleigh or north Wake County taking the NB Carolinian or Silver Star to Virginia or points north can save about 45 minutes by driving to Rocky Mount and catching the train there, compared to catching the train at Cary or Raleigh. Rocky Mount has free parking, too. The problem...

    New Piedmont Roundtrip

I've read there are only 75 parking spaces in that deck set aside for Amtrak. Will be interesting to see whether it fills up.

    New Piedmont Roundtrip

About 15 years ago, NS wanted $150 million of capital improvements to handle passenger trains Asheville-Salisbury. At the time, max timetable speed on the line was 45 mph. Now it's 25 mph. Wouldn't surprise me if NS wants $300 million today. Meanwhile NS management has become less accommodating...

    New Piedmont Roundtrip

Although I haven't personally seen the interior of the new Raleigh station, its photos appear to be more attractive, accommodating, and spacious than the Cary station -- which is functional but not grand. The new Raleigh station will have more restaurants and bars within walking distance. On...

    New Piedmont Roundtrip

Note that 75 will depart RGH 1000 while 80 will arrive RGH 1002. Also, the earlier time for 80 increases the chance of a clash with a late-running 92. Fortunately the new Raleigh station has a double platform, unlike the current station. The new schedule does reduce the likelihood of clash at...

Time to plan cross country trip before it’s too late?

Yes, do it while you can. In the 1970s I took the opportunity to ride the Floridian, the North Coast Hiawatha, the Pioneer, and the SFZ when it ran through Wyoming. I'm glad I did. My gut feel is that the only overnight trains that will survive in 15-20 years are the Auto Train and one or...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

It could have been worse, and I suspect we will see worse after 2 to 4 years of the new service.

What states are the least/most friendly to Amtrak and passenger rail?

For least friendly, one could nominate Georgia -- currently the 8th most populous state -- which has allowed the inadequate station in Atlanta to remain unaddressed for nearly 40 years. Nor has Georgia been able to do anything for intrastate service or commuter rail for metro Atlanta. When the...

    amtrak crescent delays

Another day, same story. 20 will cross the NC-VA border around 10 am, over 5 hours late. Most of the damage was between Meridian and Atlanta.
