Viewing a country across a border during a train ride

Last summer I rode in the local train from Zittau to Görlitz, Germany. The train crosses the border with Poland several times. Before Poland moved a bit to the West after the second WW it was just an in intra-Germany line. My trip report is here on AU. It's gone now, but in the nineties I took...

    Tier status extended/bumped

Even I, from the Netherlands with just a couple of sleeper trips per year and not enough TQPs, remain Select.

    VIA Preference 2.0 (Probable Devaluation)

In CAD it would have been 2,205. And off course the 30% temporary reduction thully mentioned helps a bit.

    VIA Preference 2.0 (Probable Devaluation)

I just booked a discounted cabine for one Toronto-Vancouver in October for 7,016 points and CAD 286.65 taxes. It took the lady about 45 minutes including involvement if the back-office to complete the booking, because of redeeming one of the four Premier-coupons. She explained the introduction...

Scenic routes on LIRR to the far east end of Long Island?

I offer a roundtrip: - Grand Central Terminal - Bridgeport by train; - Ferry to Port Jefferson; - Train back to Jamaica. You have to walk a bit, so dry wetter would be nice. I did that once to get from Manhattan to JFK the time-killing-way and I'd do it again.

    Amtrak delays 2023 H2 - 2024

Train 14 Los Angeles-Seattle of October 11th had a trespasser incident nearing Ventura. A replacement engineer took us into Ventura and left again to pick up another train. We wait for another engineer who is supposed to arrive at about 1530 hrs. Conductor stated another train had an incident...

What kind of Superliner is this? (Empire Builder roomette)

Oh, and because it kind of fits with the title of this thread: today on train 14 out of Los Angeles is the second time I'm in a/the touchy/feely controls car (32034):

Lounge cars getting some seatwork done also. And fresh duct tape, too! 😉 (On train 5 last Thursday from Denver.)

    California Zephyr discussion

So after this all, you called again and booked the (/your former) roomette again and got a voucher/money for the difference. With this action making a bedroom available which Amtrak wanted to sell in a low bucket and you calling in once again...?

The track circuit triggering issue (CN, Amtrak)

In the Netherlands we have some issues with loss of shunt, too. But on a more serious note, at Maasvlakte the issue normally is a residue from salt, sand and stuff from the iron ore an coal terminals being rolled on the rail head. They are testing axle counters at the moment and as expected...

    Deutschland ticket 2

Well, to me, the infrastructure in the east of Germany is compareble with other parts of Germany. After the Wiedervereinigung a lot of tax payer money, time and effort was put to work over there. Small routes were closed, but main routes are upgraded for 160/200 km/h (100-125 mph). And Leipzig...

Oh yes, totally agree with you comment . The Alex from Munich north really suffered from overloads with the old narrow doors, narrow corridors and bicycles: One man and his bike with trailer (orange thingy behind the left man) were left behind, as the trailer just didn't fit through the door...

Help with layover in Los Angeles. What to do in 12 hours?

A couple of years ago, I took Metro to Long Beach, walked a couple of blocks, took a boat trip and ate lunch before heading back to the Union Station.

After breakfast I took a daylight picture of the station: This morning I started with the 0915 service from Hamburg to Bremen. The trained was planned to leave from track 13A-C, but as the train shunted into the station, it moved to the D-F side, so I had to walk a bit. The train was not...

With some time to spare, I went back to Niebüll and took a train to Westerland/Sylt. This route uses the Hindenburgdamm wich only has train tracks, so every car an truck has to take the train. The island itself is a very popular vacation destination. At the moment the Sylt Shuttle departs eleven...

Well, let me see: what did I do today? I enjoyed breakfast while watching trains: And saw some shunting trains from my room also: After that, I walked to the station. I first rode a set of two DMUs from Lübeck to Kiel. I walked against the current of desembarking cruise ship passengers, as...

After breakfast I walked to the station. I stopped at the bridge over the river Neiße/border with Poland. It would be nice to have a locomotive hauled train on the bridge, but this efficient Polish vehicle does fine too: Today I started with a train from Görlitz to Cottbus. The train arrived...

A narrow gauge steam train! I rearranged my planning a bit and walked to the last stop before Zittau for this train, Zittau Haltepunkt: Thr train took me back to Zittau, where the engine changed to the other side in front of the terminal building: I also took a quick shot of the...

After breakfast I walked to the station and bought a sandwich for lunch later today. The train from Halle to Leipzig was already waiting: We arrived on time in Leipzig. Leipzig Hbf is pretty big: ... but I didn't have time to take a picture on the outside, as my train for Dresden was...
