    BART stalls, Uber steps in

Uber are total sharks in case of high demand. During Mardi Gras in NOLA they would demand 5x the normal price with a minimum of 50 $ for any ride. So what they usually quote you will very quickly go away in case of extraordinary demand. You still get a quote - it will just be much, much higher.

Cong. John Mica lost House, considered for transportation secretary

I honestly think all bets are off. Trump has been tweeting one thing one day and the opposite the other. Neither facts, knowledge nor his own previous statements seem to matter much to him. Economywise his proposals for tax cuts and spending doesn't add up at all. He likes big shiny things...

Amtrak settles fatal 2015 crash in Philadelphia for $265 million

The Septemer MPR is out and $ 65 million is just about what Amtrak came in over budget for the year. So the money should be there. Additionally capital spending is less than budgeted, but I don't know if Amtrak is allowed to use those money for the settlement.

    Central Europe Train Ride Recommendations

Yes you're right. Båstad station appears to have been relocated to the edge of town. The new station is immediately north of the tunnel opening. However the old station was not too near the centre of town near the harbour either.

    Central Europe Train Ride Recommendations

The climb over the Hallandsås ridge only had one or two small rural stations. I think only with local service. They will not be replaced as far as I know (I don't think they kept up local service on the old route).

Amtrak's Cost for NEC Electricity vs Diesel Fuel

It's the trend in Europe too. Even the traditional laggards like Britain and Denmark have extensive electrification plans, and a country like Sweden, where the mainlines have been electrified since the 1930's, is continuing electrifying side lines on a steady pace.

The next few years, take 2

If you get more passengers than you have seats for it just translates into the ability to charge higher prices. That's still more revenue even if it's the same number of passengers. Further Miami is the end of the line. That means that most trains, even if they are sold out on parts of the...

    Central Europe Train Ride Recommendations

The new tunnel is open and the old line closed. Also there is currently no night train any more from Scandiavia and South as the City Night Line from Copenhagen ended last year and the Stockholm-Malmö-Berlin train is currently suspended and might or might not come back. If so probably only...

Why do trains suck in the U.S.? (9 min. Video)

Well more myths than factors... Especially the war rebuild one. While the railroad network was badly damaged in several countries after the war, it was very quickly rebuilt. In a country like France everything was basically up and running again by 1947. The only way you do that is to just...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Many of at least the OECD countries have actually moved away from this kind of protectionist measures, as they tend to give higher prices and sometimes lower quality or delivery problems, especially in instances where the domestic production base is thin or have to be rebuilt entirely...

High Speed Rail Proposed for United City-States of America

I tend to agree. True HSR is feasible and should be built in large parts of the US, but a national network that looks nice on a map is really not worth the money. Nor is transcontinental passengers of any significance here. No matter what you build - the vast majority of them will stay in the...

    March 2016 Monthly Performance Report

Well obviously I'm talking about passengers that are actually allowed on the train. VA and NC passengers going north.

    March 2016 Monthly Performance Report

It looks more like a case of coach and sleeper ridership moving in opposite directions on the dinerless Star. After removing the diner, Amtrak lowered the sleeper prices on the Star and that seems to have attracted more riders who previously found the sleepers too expensive but are willing to...

    Long-Distance Train Schedule Performance

In this case it is not so much a question of who maintains the tracks most efficiently, but more to whose priorities they are maintained and dispatched. The private freight rr's of course maintain the tracks to their own needs and that can often be to a lower standard than desireable for...

Proposals for Restored Gulf Coast Service

It's actually not people here but Amtrak itself, that has previously made it clear, that it will not be run on Amtrak's dime. Someone else will have to pay for the operating deficit (and probably any capital expenses for rebuilt stations etc too, but that's less controversial). As I understand...

Wish List for Amtrak/Train Service Expansions

Are you sure? If you use the current Pennsylvanian spot, then the HAR-PIT leg would be capital cost free, but especially NS on the crowded line into Chicago is probably not interested in another train without upgrades. The "South of the Lake" project which would make room for more trains is...

[U.K.[ Modern rail travel is a slow-grinding nightmare...

Well actually the bridge and tunnel tolls act a lot like a congestion charge when it comes to NYC-NJ commutes, and to some extent from Long Island too. It is one of the reasons why New York has far the highest transit share in the country (congestion being the other).

Iowa Pacific - Can It Be Duplicated Elsewhere?

So far it has definately been a mixed bag. Ridership has cratered since IP took over. At least in the beginning there were many cancellations, and that might be why, as the Cardinal doesn't seem to have suffered the same losses. On the other hands the trip reports are really positive. But to...

    February 2016 Performance Report

Yeah that's what I thought. Weather related cancellations of the Acelas last year pushed passengers on to the Regionals, which were able to brave the weather. So the movement this year for both trains is largely a flow back to normal. Overall the corridor lost riders though, in spite of the...

Did I miss a thread about Amtrak returning Service to Florida?

Well I was referring to PRIIA though via the explanations of Anderson or other knowledgeable people here. And my special circumstances was referring to the end point rule, but as my main point was something else, I didn't spell the rule out. Especially as it is not crystal clear as Anderson has...
