A bleak map in VIA's Annual Report

Well I mean it sucks, but you deal with it. You get 1-2 hours of sleep throughout the night, but it is not a big deal to me while I'm still young. I don't have any strategies other than have a window seat so you can lean against something. Even if it's stiff it's still better to lean your head...

A bleak map in VIA's Annual Report

I entirely understand that red eye flights aren't for everyone, and I respect that, but I didn't take those airlines 1) driving an hour and a half (dont even get me started on the 405's traffic though) to LAX is either a waste of gas or fairly expensive on the train, when in 25 minutes I can...

A bleak map in VIA's Annual Report

Take a look at eastbound flights from the West Coast to the East Coast! I would venture to say 30-40% of them are red eyes, because the ability to try to sleep away the time, and not losing a day in travel are very important to a lot of people, not just business travelers. When I went to New...

Amtrak selling intra NEC seats on SB LD trains

I entirely agree with MattW ont his matter. What I have ALWAYS thought would work best is that on southbound trains, for every ticket that is sold Alexandria-point south, open up a slot NYP-ALX, or with WAS as well, at first opening of seats, dont sell any tix for intra-NEC traffic, but when a...

Potential BART strike effect on Capitol Corridor service?

Texan Eagle, it sounds like Carmageddon in LA the past few years, when there were two separate weekends (both during summer) where the 405 through Sepulveda Pass was entirely shut down. The news agencies spread it all around fearing the absolute worst, and when it came time, the roads were the...

Amtrak meetup in Dana Point, CA (February 2013)

I am not surprised by anything in this video I see Cascades engines frequently, as I do the occasional multiple engines. The stuff sure doesn't run perfectly ALL the time :)

    National network?

True. As much as the gap in connection works, the bus is the far superior option. The route is circuitous, slow and single track with sidings for almost the entire route, and goes far out of the way. The 5 is, while truck AND traffic prone (don't even get me started on the eternal jam that is...

Jointed Rail on the Empire Builder?

All in all, the EB is very smooth. Then again, I have slept through everything, welded or not, but never had any problems on the EB :)

how fast is the wifi connection on Amtrak trains?

Until recently, on the Pacific Surfliner, it has been very slow, with sometimes 400+ people all trying to be on at once. On my trip this April, however, the speed was great the entire way!!! No music that requires an internet connection (Spotify, Pandora, etc.) and no videos, but the internet...

    LAUS Metropolitan Lounge?

While I don't have experience with it, my mom did tell me about the whole Disneyland lettering system last time we were there a few years ago. It was prompted by reminiscence of the old submarine ride :)

    LAUS Metropolitan Lounge?

That is honestly my favorite thing about SAN - the approach. From right after you make the hard right bank over Spring Valley/Lakeside, you descend roughly along the 94, watching the Trolleys roll by under you on the Orange Line, and then the bridge, any cruise ships, and downtown all under you...

    LAUS Metropolitan Lounge?

One wonderful thing about SAN (the airport) is its proximity to the downtown core. Only two miles outside, as it was built at least a decade before WW2. You really can't beat that :)

Current floodwater status on Empire Builder

Do you mean 2011? I believe it was two years ago rather than 4 that the Minot depot was flooded and the EB had to be outright cancelled...

    Metrolink Bomb Scare

I thought the exact same thing Sorcha. The rush to get a story out right as it's breaking ALWAYS is inaccurate to some extent. The details emerge over time, in almost all stories.

    Most untapped market

Hahaha thanks Nick. And sorry for the wrong correction... oops... I didn't know that it had slipped that far.

    Most untapped market

Just for the record, I believe O'Hare is actually 2nd largest in the world not 5th, unless Beijing has by now edged it to 3rd...

Teenager dies playing chicken with Capitol Corridor train.

On Thursday, my grandma and I were riding back from Sacramento on the last San Jose departure of the night, at 5:40. When we were in Richmond, I saw on the electronic signs that train 544 was delayed due to trespasser incident, and I knew what that meant. I didn't tell my grandma, or the woman...

Does anyone know the status of the Caltrans Comet IB cars?

I'm fairly certain that the California Cars are not in use on the Surfliner service. These cars, the first batch that arrived, have the cafe on the upper level, and every Surfliner car set in SoCal has the same cafe arrangement.

    Most untapped market

Wow never thought I would see this resurrected! There has been a clear focus on the Southeast since this was resurrected, and while it obviously needs work, I still have to go for an 11-hour offset 9:30PM departure of the CS from LA, arriving Seattle TWO days later at 7:30AM continuing to...

Notes from the 2013 Northwest Spring Rail Conference

While the WInnipeg connections could add 10K to the EB each year, does it have capacity AT ALL even in the off season through North Dakota right now? At what point, if any, will MN and ND jump in and decide they want to pay for a day Minneapolis-Williston train? Assuming equip, of course, but...
