    Improve Texas Eagle

San Marcos is home to Texas State University of over 20000 college students. And we all know how college students are a prime market for Amtrak. I would also support having a station in Round Rock to serve North Austin and its suburbs, that way they don't have to drive in traffic down to the...

Todays TE#22 5 Hours Late out of SAS

There's a four hour gap between the arrival of #22 into FTW and the departure of the NB Heartland Flyer... So I'd say yes.

Todays TE#22 5 Hours Late out of SAS

I would imagine that the problem would be a engine failure or a bad order. This would be the second time this month when the engine on the Texas Eagle pooped out and died. Perhaps we need to tell Amtrak that there needs to be more than one engine on the TE. The P42s' reliability leaves much to...

    Numbers of cars

Okay! Thanks! That's really helpful! Also, is there any information on when each type of car and locomotive is expected to reach the end of their service life?

    Numbers of cars

Okay, I'm wondering how many cars were ordered (and are still in service) for each type of car, including Amfleets, Superliners, and any equipment Amtrak or state agencies are looking into buying. So, currently, there are the: (Future cars in parentheses) (* indicates car can go to NYC)...

    My Sunset Limited improvement plan

Nope: That's also UP. I don't know what the "CN" signs mean, but it definitely isn't owned by Canadian National. But if it was owned by Canadian National, it would help explain the recent derailments on that part of the route. "Derail like CN!"

    Obama: HSR Funding "Untouchable"

Anything Obama wants is untouchable. That's politics really, especially when the politician is in an unyielding mood like Obama is right now. Will he keep his word though? I don't know.

Rare shots you've wanted to get

Sometimes there's some sort of delay or rerouting that sends an Amtrak train onto "rare milage". There's actually a forum for this. Sometimes though, delays can make odd catches possible. For example, back sometime in mid-June, Texas Eagle #21 was delayed some 10 hours due to a derailment in...

    Looney Toons Car

    Well that's all folks!

    #8 is running

Well this is interesting... The eastbound Empire Builder (#8) is running again! According to the Amtrak Status Maps, it just left Libby, MT and it is ON TIME.

    Texas Eagle

Which direction are you coming/going from? If you're coming south from Austin and San Antonio, I'd recommend Fort Worth, because that's where the layover is. If you're coming from the east or north (Longview all the way to Chicago), I'd choose Dallas. The two stations seem about equal, but...

    North Flyer

Another drawback to intercity rail in Oklahoma is that the gas prices are the lowest in the nation. Back in 2008 when there was $5 dollar gas in California and the Northeast, gas was around $3.69 in OK. You say the drive on the Turner Turnpike is boring, but is it fast or slow? How much traffic...

    North Flyer

Wouldn't the ROW come from running trains between OKC and Tulsa in the ROW of the Will Rogers Turnpike? That alignment could handle up to 150 mph trains, and the width of the ROW is about 300 ft - more than enough for both the highway and a railroad.

Empire Builder and the Souris River

Amtrak is one of those "customers", and they don't want to send in the Empire Builder just to see it get super-delayed.

    Late-Starting Trains Today?

What's been causing the lateness with the CS? I remember it having a 90% OTP last year. I don't why the other trains would be late.

Bad News For The Meatball Sub Fans!

Is this sarcasm or not? Was the meatball sandwich really that good? Does anyone have pictures of the meatball sub?

    Slumbercoaches or sectional sleepers?

Mmmkay, so lets say that Amtrak gets a big new equipment order for their LD/overnight trains, which would lead to an expansion of LD services (more routes, longer trains, multiple frequines/day). Of course getting such expansion to happen is another story, so dont give me the old "amtrak doesnt...

UK designer develops idea for non-stopping high speed trains

I've seen a different design for a "nonstop HSR stop" idea, the one in my case being a separate "pod" that is carried on top of the train and is dropped off'/picked up at stations. I'd like to show the link, but the website where I found it is currently down.

Amtrak gets $562 million RRIF Loan for the ACS-64s

By the time the new locos are complete, the AEM-7s would be 35+ years old. HHP-8 isn't liked by Amtrak because it's been unreliable for them.

    Update on Viewliner 8400

Keep in mind that when PRR designed the Metroliner back in the 1960s, flying (and the airlines) were viewed as the world-class standard in design and customer satisfaction. Amtrak's first CEO thought he could run the company like the airline (or something like that), for those same reasons. Oh...
