Last time I rode the SWC was in March of '05. I had my wife and 2 sons in a bedroom suite. Ephran took wonderful care of us and we took wonderful care of him with very generous tips. Ephran is what all Amtrak attendents should aspire to be.....definately a pro!!!

    How many of you...

My parents and I rode the Rock Island "Rocket" several times in the very early 1960's. I was approx. 3-4 years old. I still remember bits and pieces of those trips. I loved it!!! Then in July of 1964, my mom, little sister, and I rode Santa Fe's "San Francisco Chief" from Chillicothe, Illinois...

Don't you miss those heritege cars

I miss the heritage fleet very much. I love the look of single level passenger cars, especially those of all stainless steel construction with those beautiful fluted sides. There was just such a "look" about them that I think was so majestic. I recall the sheer beauty of the late great "Super...

    "Athearn" Alco PA unit....

I have an Athearn Alco PA unit, HO guage, done in the Santa Fe warbonnet paint scheme. I got it for Christmas in 1970. It has remained in a glass case for 34 years and has not been ran. Would it be a collectable of any worth or just an old friend from my childhood. I would never want to part...

Late Night in the Lounge Car...

Not too very long ago, I took my family on a circle trip from Chicago to San francisco to Los Angeles and then back to Chicago. We scrimmped and saved and were able to book a bedroom suite for the entire trip. We loved the train but were shocked at all of the people sleeping on the floor of the...

    Where do you reside?

I'm from Peoria Heights, Illinois. I've been a passenger train fan ever since riding the "San Francisco Chief" at the age of 6. The year was 1964. I have been captivate ever since. We had a "compartment" with a private lounge in the end of the car. It was pure magic! Later on I was to ride the...

    SWC DINER STILL GREAT

Quite true.....this past spring, I took my family on a round trip from Chicago to Los Angeles and back. The food and service on the SW Chief were outstanding.....and ontime all of the way!

    Life on the mainline

Wow! Sounds like a great view! :) The SW CHIEF used to come within about 15 miles of here. I would make the trip quite often...just to see such magnificence roll into the station...always a grand entrance! A few years back, my old friend was rerouted. Now it's a 50 mile trip so our paths...

    Tipping ?

I thought I would inject my 2 cents into this conversation. "GIORDANOS" is thee place for pizza while in Chicago. Having lived in this great city at one time and made billions of visits........I must say Giordanos is always on the "to do" list. Go for it.....very worthwhile. B)

    How To Pay For Katrina

I hope this will not be the case. I do not doubt though, that the "Katrina" crisis will be used to justify budget cuts far and wide. This will be the current regime's justification to swing the ax freely...as I am sure they will attempt. Amtrak will be an easy target. Hopefully congress will...

    Article on Budget

Amtrak, with her long distance routes intact.......including both diners and sleepers........will survive the onslought.

Senate restrictions may kill Amtrak afterall

In regards to Mr. Mineta,,,he is as poor of an excuse of a "transportation secretary" as this nation has seen in many, many years. His stance regarding Amtrak is as ignorant and embarrassing as any misguided shlump on any given street in America. He speaks as a marionette of the conservative...
