2 questions about upcoming Coast Starlight trip

"Hat check slips"?? What's that? So, RUN! Run like the wind to the PPC as soon as you get your room. Good thing to know. Glad I read this thread.

    Coast Starlight L.A. to Oakland

Thank you, Traveler! Tomorrow at this time I'll be -- well, I don't know where I'll be! On a train, wine-tasting, perhaps....

Use of electric cigarettes in sleeper

Sunchaser, thank you for that suggestion. Might be worth a try. And thanks for the info, Alan. I can do four or five hours... but twelve would be difficult.

Use of electric cigarettes in sleeper

Thank you. After I posted, but before your response, I decided to call Amtrak to ask the question. The woman I spoke to must be a smoker, as she was sweet and kind. ;) She said that there should be time at most stops, what with loading luggage, helping people with disabilities to board...

Use of electric cigarettes in sleeper

Okay! So, question for the non-haters: Does the Coast Starlight make any stops between Los Angeles and Oakland where there is time to get off the train and smoke just a puff or two? Going tomorrow! Thanks, V

    Coast Starlight L.A. to Oakland

Nice pics, RF! I can't wait! I'm going LAX to OKJ, too. Got a sleeper for access to the Parlour Car -- and just for the experience. Up Saturday, all of Sunday in SF, then back on Monday. Thanks.... :) V

    Coast Starlight L.A. to Oakland

11:45 it is! Thanks, all. I wasn't sure I could hang out in the PPC during lunchtime; figured the car might be reserved for people eating at certain times, and didn't know there was a separate lounge section. Early lunch and then scenery sounds perfect. Thank you!

    Coast Starlight L.A. to Oakland

Going this Saturday! I was wondering if any of you have advice on what would be the best time for our lunch reservation in the PPC to make sure we're passing the best scenery while we're in there. Thanks! I know that the train arrives at and departs from Santa Barbara at 12:48 p.m.

    Coast Starlight: L.A. to Oakland

We have a lunch reservation at The Slanted Door. I've been there a couple of times before (both times for lunch) and enjoyed everything. The only thing I specifically remember, though, is the "Shaking Beef." Mmmm. Dinner plans are not finalized, but I'm thinking maybe Tadich Grill (for the...

    Coast Starlight: L.A. to Oakland

... Or maybe even to Vancouver! (Next time. :) ) Well, I keep upgrading, little by little. Now we are going to San Francisco and staying at the Omni for two nights (instead of the place in Oakland where one reviewer said, "I'd rather sleep on a bus bench" ). It's a bus ride...

    Coast Starlight: L.A. to Oakland

Woohoo! They are going to give us little bottles of wine!? Yes, I think we will take the ferry, rather than the BART, from Oakland to SF. And Ed, you do make an excellent point.... ;)

    Coast Starlight: L.A. to Oakland

So I've been thinking that we won't really get the full train experience and full value from the Roomette, and we will miss the most beautiful scenery, if we just do a day trip to Santa Barbara and back. Having slept on the idea, I've decided that we're going from Union Station to Oakland (with...

    Coast Starlight Roomette Numbers?

GG-1: Given we might only be doing the day trip between L.A. and Santa Barbara, I think your post makes sense. I called Amtrak (again!), and the guy said, "You'll be lucky if you get lunch." It is an extra $66 beyond the coach ticket price each way for a roomette. Might be nice to spend that...

    Coast Starlight Roomette Numbers?

"upstairs you'll... be closer to drinks and such." Well, I like that! :) We're in room 5 northbound and 2 southbound. The Amtrak lady told me they are both upstairs, but I wasn't sure if it was better to be upstairs or downstairs. I like the proximity to drinks, so I'll stick with the...

    Coast Starlight Roomette Numbers?

Another question: I think our room is on the upper level both ways. Is upper level just as good as lower level? I assume the rooms are the same, but in case we do get lucky and end up on the ocean side, would we rather be on the upper level or the lower? Thank you!

    Coast Starlight Roomette Numbers?

Thanks. I am considering changing the reservation to go to San Luis Obispo instead, since reading about the spectacular scenery between SB and SLO. It was only going to be a day trip, but maybe it's worth it to stay over a night. And thank you, Traveler. I am getting the idea that the PPC is...

    Coast Starlight Roomette Numbers?

Okay, thanks, Mr. FSS. Appreciate the info....

    Coast Starlight Roomette Numbers?

Hi all. Newbie here. I am taking the bf on the Coast Starlight (Los Angeles to Santa Barbara) for his birthday (first real train experience for both of us, which is why I chose to reserve a Roomette even though it's just two and a half hours each way -- for the extra amenities), and I'm hoping...
