Restoration of New Orleans - Mobile - Jacksonville Gulf Coast Service

Why is it up to Amtrak or the FRA to provide funding for this line. It is 400 mi. To there fore less than the750 mi PRIIA requirement for local/state support. The Hoosier state is being cancelled at the end of this month because Indiana won't pay the 3 mil yr operating. Illinois is providing...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

So Amtrak will have to bid on the work..just like Virgin, Capital Corridor, IP and all the others. And Amtrak will have to divulge the cost of running corridor service without the cover of LD overhead. Should be interesting..

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

So A new maintenance facility is realistic, and should be under consideration very soon since the new cars begin to roll off Jan 2020. Maintenance facility is independent of Amtrak since the locos and cars will be owned by the Coalition states of MI, MO and IL.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

Nippon Sharyo is a good possibility, a little far out... Better yet Progress Rail in LaGrange -rumor is that it is closing. Heavy machine shop, large multiple building facility. VERY close in (15m) with direct access to BNSF and CN both are on Illinois Corridor lines which will employ the...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

I suspect that Indiana gop may have put the future of Beach Grove in jeopardy. Consider this: The Siemens Chargers are in service and the passenger cars are in production and due to to begin delivery in 2020. These train-sets are owned by the states (not Amtrak), specifically the Midwest...

Hoosier State tickets sales suspended for after June 30

I have driven the I-65 route too many times. The truck traffic is maddening. Trucks wander into the left lane to pass each other. One truck at 59mph and another at 60mph. It takes 10 miles to complete the pass. And the road surface is beatup. As a business traveller Chi-Ind, I would gladly...

Hoosier State tickets sales suspended for after June 30

toddinde - I might have given the wrong impression, I am just frustrated with the hand wringing on the HS. I definitely want it to survive and agree that when it is gone it will be hard to bring it back. I agree the equipment reallocation is peanuts, the $3 mil is a blip. It is not up to me - it...

Hoosier State tickets sales suspended for after June 30

You're not wrong CrescentZephyr, this has been the issue with the HS from the onset. I have read and posted and read again the same comments on many boards about the HS. At this point I have given up hope on this train. Let it die, reallocate the meager trainset pieces to other routes, wish...

Rerouting the Pere Marquette? News article

I was excited when I saw the title of the thread I thought it was an update on the proposed rail connection of the CSX?Amtrak line just north of New Buffalo. http://www.cityofnewbuffalo.org/downloads/city_of_new_buffalo_mi_1_tiger_app_narrative.pdf This connection would reroute the PM off of...

    Joe Boardman to Retire

I cant see the the CONO getting cut. It has solid ridership and shares track line with 2 Illinois trains. And it generates revenues from the IP excursions tacked on the back. Granted political clout is weak with MS,TN. In the past anytime Amtrak was in danger in MS Trent Lott came to the...

Illinois vs Michigan High Speed rail

Thanks for the review Woody. The Illinois project is making progress. But much of the investment is still in the underlying infrastructure stage. People are impatient for results, but this is what incrementalism looks like. And Illinois is aware and intentional to enhance the freight system...

Illinois vs Michigan High Speed rail

UP to build 2 track bridge cross Kankakee river there have been a lot of structural improvement that lay ground work for higher speeds and fewer freight interference. The focus on culvert and drainage ditches will allow for the installation of over 12 new higher speed passing sidings and...

MN and WI ask for study of second MSP-CHI train

Very unlikely that EB adds SVT. WiDOT would rather see more stops at MKA to increase traffic to General Mitchell. 30% of pax come from No. Illinois.

Funding for Hoosier State: The Saga Continues

Indiana has either been playing a game or is really bad at rail planning. Bottom line is that they missed out on the current round of Fed rail investment. Certainly will not be any ARRA orTIGER money this year for infrastructure. And they are not part of the Midwest/CA equipment purchase. So...

    Route extension

If you actually read that study conclusion, It makes clear that the St.Louis - Springfield line would be too costly and far to slow to draw enough pax. It is not going to happen. There is no way the MO legislature is going to approve the annual funding to support it and the proposed train will...

    Changes to the Cardinal

All the MWHSR plans have a Chicago to Cincy route planned that may run as many as 6 trains per day, even now the Hoosier would be well served to extend beyond Indy and become a Chi-Cincy city pair with Indy and Lafayette station stops. By routing the Cardinal from Cincy-L'vile-E'ville-St. L you...

New Route Chicago - Dubuque, Iowa

There has been a feasablility report here: http://dot.state.il.us/amtrak/RCK_Feasibility.pdf And the Illinois Gov. Quinn has promised state funding, since the project did not get any Federal stimulus dollars. But Illinois has a $5 billion defecit so I don't know if this will make the cut...
