    Let's Help Amtrak Lose Money

For the price I have sometimes paid for sleeper accomodations, I do expect hot water in the shower, hot coffee in the morning, and courteous service from all employees. I would not expect a voucher for rough rail. But first class sleeper prices should come with functioning showers and coffee.

Short Term Luggage Storage in New Orleans?

I have good intentions to write a short trip report about the entire journey (hopefully later this week). But due to a mechanical problem on my United Airlines flight from Austin to Houston (where I connected to another flight to New Orleans), I ended up arriving in New Orleans at 12:30 p.m...

Short Term Luggage Storage in New Orleans?

Yes, I agree - I've read on here that the City of New Orleans lacks spectacular scenery, but it's got to be better than I35 through Texas!

Short Term Luggage Storage in New Orleans?

Yes, you can check your luggage quite early. But I have a roll-aboard that I want on the sleeper with me.

Short Term Luggage Storage in New Orleans?

Thanks, Jim! I had planned to take the Texas Eagle north from Austin yesterday, connect with the Southwest Chief, pick up my friend Ward in Lawrence, Kansas and then we're heading on to LA and (hopefully) making the connection to the Coast Starlight. With the temporary bus running between Austin...

Southwest Chief to Coast Starlight Connection at LAX

Today the passengers on the SWC lucked out. It looks like the held the CS since the SWC arrived in LA about 10:30.

Short Term Luggage Storage in New Orleans?

Does anyone have experience with short term luggage storage at the Amtrak station in New Orleans? I searched older posts and saw that the Magnolia room does not have a secure place to store luggage. Amtrak's website says that there's no baggage storage. I'll be flying into New Orleans early...

Southwest Chief to Coast Starlight Connection at LAX

Yes, this an AGR bedroom redemption, so no overnight in LA. I've taken the Chief twice before with no worries, but this summer it's really gone downhill. I'm hoping that if we end up on a bus and in coach seats instead of the first day of the CS I will be able to get some compensation from...

Southwest Chief to Coast Starlight Connection at LAX

I'm scheduled on the Southwest Chief early next week, connecting to the Coast Starlight in LA. I hadn't been the slightest bit worried about the connection because the Chief is usually one of Amtrak's best performers. (Last time I took it we were an hour early.) I've been checking on it lately...

Woo hoo! Wine tasting resuming in the Parlour Car!

I'm so glad the wine tasting is back, and for a very modest additional fee. I'll be on the CS next week and I was really bummed that the tasting had gone away. Happy it's back!

    Double Dipping on the Cap

I have encountered good dining crews on the CL that followed the rules and allowed breakfast and an early lunch with a smile. On another occasion, when the train was going to be over two hours late into Washington, we were made to feel unwelcome and like we were "getting away with something"...

    Texas Eagle, end of July

I changed around my summer train plans to avoid the bus ride between Austin and Fort Worth outbound and between San Antonio and Austin on my return. While I certainly understand the need for track work and improvements at Fort Worth, it is an awfully long time for us to be without trains in...

    Texas Eagle, end of July

The way they present the bustitution on the website is confusing. When you try to book STL to TPL, the first result shows that the train is cancelled. If you scroll down, however, you will see that they second travel option presented is the train to FTW followed by the bustitution to TPL. They...

What's Going On With Eagle Reservations?

I think I'm going to view it as an opportunity to make my annual summer train adventure something different. I try to include my home station of Austin in the mix as a sign of support (and since I think it's a really great little station). But with the bus, I think I might reconsider for...

What's Going On With Eagle Reservations?

I finally thought I had my summer trip planned, now it's back to the drawing board. I was to be on 422 from LAX to AUS. According to the new schedule we'll detrain in San Antonio early in the morning to take a bus to Austin. Not the last of six nights in a bedroom on an AGR reward that I was...

Connection from Texas Eagle 22 to Southwest Chief 3

Thanks for the clarification, Jim! Ordinarily, I completely agree with you -- I would be happy to chill for as long as Amtrak needed to put me up to take the next train. In this case, I was more nervous since I'm meeting up with a friend later in the journey. But I totally agree that the best...

Connection from Texas Eagle 22 to Southwest Chief 3

One thing I'm not clear on, if the thruway van 5522 is to ferry passengers on train 22 to their connections in Galesburg, why would it leave Springfield before the Texas Eagle arrived? That possibility is what scares me about using the thruway connection in this case.

It's back (the 50% points purchase bonus)

FYI, I didn't see the offer right away on the page for buying points. The offer only appeared once I'd gone through the first stage of completing the transaction. I almost gave up too soon. I had to reach the place where you choose how many points you'd like to buy.

Connection from Texas Eagle 22 to Southwest Chief 3

:-) I left out the bit about switching to the MORR in St. Louis that morning. (quite a crucial step) Last time I road the River Runner they had the nice 2-1 seating in business class and I really enjoyed it. We had a really great attendant in the lounge/business class car and I enjoyed the scenery!

Connection from Texas Eagle 22 to Southwest Chief 3

Right now, I'm leaning toward to following: I'll take 22 up from Austin to Kansas City. My friend will pick me up at the station in Kansas City and we'll drive the half hour or so to Lawrence and I can see some of sights, eat dinner at the Free State Brewery I like, visit friends, and then...
