    just curious...trains and lost phones

I am glad you got your phone back! I left mine in my sleeper on the Cap Ltd coming into Pittsburgh, reported it and did get it back as well--however, someone had stolen the photo card. My bad, but at least I got the phone back.

Bad experience on Amtrak with sleeper rooms

No problem with getting waked up 30 minutes before arrival--I appreciate that courtesy--but I don't expect to get rushed out of my room with (or without) groggy children to go sit up in another room while I wait. The room should belong to the paying passenger(s) until arrival. Part of the reason...

    Disorderly ? passenger "ejected"

Attempting to upgrade to a sleeper on board is not gaming or loop holing or any other such nonsense. It is just riskier than just buying what you really want when you book. Also, just because someone with a bad experience (and I DO consider getting put off the train involuntarily a bad...

    Capitol Limited Bussed

We just traveled Pittsburgh to CHI to Dallas and back via trains and had no delays until the ride back into Pittsburgh this morning. The train was due to arrive at 4:30 a.m. but was held up till 6:30. I was getting off at Pittsburgh anyway, but I felt really bad for fellow passengers in the...

California Zephyr or Southwest Chief, which do you recommend?

Both are lovely, but I prefer the CZ as well. Spouse and I always choose roomettes and find them very comfortable for two not large people. I also don't want to have a toilet in my room--so no more bedrooms for us. Personal preference, of course, but I would go roomette on the CZ. Have fun...

2 adults plus a baby in a roomette?

Spouse and I took our 8 month old to DC from Pittsburgh in a roomette--but it was a Superliner so no toilet in the room (yay!) It worked fine and I'm 5'6' and about 135 lbs (I could be lying by 5 pounds). Baby slept on bottom bunk with me. As PP's have said, there isn't much room to play on the...

Texas Eagle Conductor: This... is... a... recording.

Rather than record her announcement re children and families I think she should skip it. On the Capitol Limited my husband attempted to allow our 3 year old to go ahead of him out of our sleeper car into the next car toward the diner. The conductor stepped in front of the child and said...

    Is Amtrak LD Truly Relevant

As a tax payer, I'm happy to subsidize LD trains--a lot happier than I am about some other things I'm subsidizing. I will ride LD's as long as they run and I am able, but I'll be riding for fun, not to get to a business meeting on time in Sacramento when I live in Pittsburgh. Doesn't bother me...

    Boarding the train at Midnight

Agreed. I haven't traveled in Coach but I do take up the extra seat in Business class on the Pennsylvanian whenever I'm lucky enough to have one beside me. However, I vacate it at boardings and would also do so if asked, as I didn't pay for it.

Dealing with Passengers Unhappy with Community Dining

Spouse and I have traveled for three years with a small child on LD trains and we have never had a fourth person seated with us at any meal in any dining car. I'm pretty sure this is for the happiness of the potential fourth person, as most adults can be forgiven for not wanting to sit at table...

Shoes on seat - Yay or nay?

Sure would if following the lead of the host or hostess. Not with my shoes on, of course. My friends and I frequently sit around each other's houses watching TV and chatting curled up on the couches and/or chairs. I also put my feet on hostess' guest bed, again without shoes, when I stay all...

Shoes on seat - Yay or nay?

I have not ridden in coach, but I put my feet up in roomettes/rooms and business class. I do cover the seat with something and take my shoes off first. However, I am under no illusion that lots of passengers just put the old feet right up there shoes and all, so I travel with disinfectant and...

Poll: How Many Points Do You Have In AGR Today?

I feel like such a moron. I have about 30,000 points, but I have no earthly idea how to best use them. I guess I'm not the BIGGEST moron because at least I am signed up and getting points--unlike a couple of my friends!

    Empire Builder, Behind the Scenes.

Thanks for posting! I saw this years ago, and having never been on an Amtrak train, decided to give it a try. Now I'm addicted. The host is a little too high energy for me (can't imagine being on a long trip with him), but he is amusing and informative.

    Cap Ltd. Service Disruptions

Thanks for posting the link. The Capitol Ltd from Chi to DC got into Pitts anywhere between an hour and 3 hours late during my recent Pitts to DC trips. This will be a real crap shoot for 13 months for passengers. I think I will cancel Sept 13 and go on Pennsylvanian instead--no roomettes...

    Cap Ltd. Service Disruptions

I'm on CL September 13 (a Tuesday) in a roomette from PG to DC. I do NOT want to trade for a bus. I'd rather drive. If offered bustitution, may I decline and still get a full refund?

    Coach Seating?

Depending upon the age of your child(ren), the attendant will make sure you are together if at all possible. I travel with a toddler and sometimes a teenager as well. The attendant always asks someone to move if necessary so the toddler is with me. Singles have been very pleasant about moving...

    Auto Train or Silver Service

I never noticed the motion as annoying, but I am a bit prone to motion sickness and was affected (afflicted!) on one occasion.

My little heart stopping adventure on the NEC

Oldsmoboi--thank heavens you were there and that you took it upon yourself to help this family in general, and then to pull the child to safety. As a woman who travels often with children (one is 3 years old), this really hits home. I have generally found the Amtrak personnel to be helpful in my...

Filthy bathrooms in refurbished Wilminton Delaware Station

Traveler, I like that idea. The Pittsburgh PA station keeps restrooms locked during the night so one has to ask to have it opened.
