    Suggestions for July AGR Trip

Thanks folks, that gives me some things to think about. Charlottesville is one I had not considered but might be fun. I like VT and the idea of going north, but the lodging/car rental part is an obstacle. Hostels are something to consider, but since my son is handicapped, we might run into...

    Suggestions for July AGR Trip

I've gone back to school, so free time to travel is limited. Also money. However, I have about 25,000 AGR points and a mid-term break either July 2-6 or July 8-11. (Previously scheduled appt at home on the 7th.) Would appreciate suggestions for 2 or 3 day round trips for 2 people using AGR...

    New passenger question

I am 5 feet tall and I can sit comfortably on the lower bunk in a Superliner roomette (double decker car) with the upper bunk down. I just miss the upper bunk with my head, but I DO miss it. So, unless the kids are really tall, this could be a workable option.

Connecting from the Southwest Chief to the Santa Fe Southern at Lamy

Also the Railrunner stops several places in Santa Fe, while the SFS stops at only one place near the edge of the downtown. The thruway private service that contracts with Amtrak to provide connections into Santa Fe from the SWC takes pax directly to/from their lodgings/residences. Also have to...

    "Crying Amtrak Girl" scam

But, according to one of your previous posts on another thread, you were very vociferous in defending your right to refer to someone as "retarded" - why is that different? Just curious. I'm sure you know it's quite common for homeless people who panhandle in public places to be mentally...

roomette with in-room toilet, does it smell?

The accessible bedroom on Superliners also has an out in the open toilet and sink, although the toilet is about 2 1/2 ft away from the bed. I greatly appreciated the in-room facilities when traveling with my handicapped adult son. I can't leave him unattended to go use a toilet elsewhere in the...

    Meals, Children, and Sleeper Travel

We had the opposite experience with sleeper meals. Last fall my handicapped son and I took the CL and SWC out west and back. He is 24, but I was able to order from either the adult or children's menu for him, depending on which foods I thought he could handle best. He really liked the children's...

First time with 2 kids. PGH-FLO

I vote for changing in PHL. The layover is shorter, the departure from PGH is better and the Redcaps in PHL are very helpful. When you get to PHL, you want to go over to the Redcap podium and ask them to help you board the Meteor. They will handle your luggage and see that you get pre-boarded...

    Gender of railfans

Well, before i was laid off i was commuting 5 days/week on the Keystone service. I slept on the 85 minute OW ride most of the time. In 6 years I did sleep past my stop a few times. Going home (wbound at night) was no big deal as there are only 2 stops after mine so getting someone to come get me...

    Amtrak Photog Suggestion

My ex husband worked as a maintenance man at a mental hospital while in engineering school. Found he could get in just about anywhere if he was in his work khakis with his plastic badge (no photo in those innocent days) that said Mr. XYZ, Maintenance.

    Gender of railfans

No offense taken here. My 24-yr old son is considered to have a low-functioning PDD diagnosis. Last Sept we went out west on the CL and the SWC. He loved the train and slept thru the nights easily in the lower bunk. At home he rarely sleeps thru the night, a common finding with ASD people. As...

    Grand Canyon

Yes, but you may not get the van transport from/to the WMS JCT cement pad in the desert where the SWC stops to the actual town of WMS unless you are staying at the GCRR affiliated hotel. This hotel is quite expensive, to my mind, when WMS is awash with other hotels of all price levels. Yes, you...

    Grand Canyon

My son and I took SWC to and from the GC last Sept. We considered Williams Jct and the GCRR but found the options for overnight stays at the South Rim too limited. The only hotels they offered in their packages were not on the rim. You should also be aware that the GCRR does not run along the...

    National Train Day 2010 Plans

Besides, some of us AU members ARE mothers, too. A nice relaxing train ride might be just the thing.

    Questions about toilets

On the SWC we were shown by the SCA how to add an ice bucket full of water to the H room toilet bowl if the flush was not adequate for the contents to go down. So if the SCAs do it, I guess the system can handle it. I think I recall the SCA recommended using warm water instead of cold, too. Not...

overnight train's virtues put anxieties to sleep

I see people said it was a nice article. Unfortunately, to read it i would have had to install an updated Flash player which will not fit on my "home" drive on my elderly desktop MAC. Could posters please warn people if videos and links need software upgrades to be viewed. Yes, it would be nice...

Is a transition sleeper roomette worth high bucket rates?

My handicapped son and I were placed in a transdorm accessible room at the last minute on the eastbound CL out of CHI when the door to our original room was found to be broken. Amtrak had to have a crew member move out of the room so we could use it while the train was waiting to depart CHI. We...

Improving the Rider Experience - Community and Technology Unique to Am

Amtrak produces printed route guides for all or most of the long distance trains that they run. These have exactly the information you are interested in. Usually there are copies lying around on the train or you can probably get one by asking the car attendant. The route guides are also in the...

    Rooomette Trainediqute

Last Sept my 24-year-old son and I shared an accessible roomette on a trip out west. Matthew is handicapped and could not get into the upper bunk if he wanted to, but I suppose some people might have thought our mixed gender arrangement odd if they didn't know us. So maybe we should simply not...

    Superliner III

The airline escape ramps are inflatable, like life-rafts sort of. They ask people to remove shoes, especially high heels, before using them on the safety instruction cards. The ramps is rolled up in a spot under an emergency escape (push-out) window. When needed it is deployed out the window and...
