    NTD in DC

I agree the display lines were a disaster. The timed tickets were a waste of time. My 'time' was 11:30 and I wasn't the only one told to go to the back of the line. I estimated close to 500 already waiting in a line that wormed back into the concourse and around the retail area. People were...

Airline to charge for carry-on bags

Charging passengers for their own baggage ain't nothin'. Ryanair in Britain is actually commencing to charge for using the toilet. Here's the link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-...-toilet-charges. Now how long before US airlines start charging as well?

Short-Term Baggage Storage at NY Penn Station

Thank for the answers. Even though the luggage will stored for a few hours it will be worth the price not having to drag everything around while we get lunch.

Short-Term Baggage Storage at NY Penn Station

Is there are baggage storage area at NYP? I'll have a few hours to waste after arriving NY from a cruise. I don't feel like having to sit around the waiting area for 5 hours until departure. I know they have checked baggage service but the train I am taking has no checked baggage.

    Cruise ships

I recently booked a cruise on NCL leaving out of NY. While NCL doesn't have a package plan that includes rail transport they do have a deal with Amtrak. All I needed to do was call the Amtrak group desk and tell them I had booked a NCL cruise. They knocked 25% off the lowest fare. Turned out to...

    AM Radio Use on Amtrak

For overnight trips I bring along a portable shortwave receiver (Sony ICF-2010). I clip an antenna wire to metal on the car and start band-scanning. Obviously shortwave isn't for the 'local flavor' but it does provide access to different sources of music and news. The fluorescent lighting...

Empty Passenger Cars on the Capitol Limited

This past Sunday I was on the METRO Red Line heading towards Shady Grove. On the section from Twinbrook to Rockville we were pacing #29. Right behind the engines there was a Horizon car. Since we were running at almost the same speed it gave me the chance to take a good look. The Horizon car was...

    Street Running

Ashland, VA. I know the Autotrain runs through town. Probably the Silvers and the NEC trains to Richmond.

    Amtrak and train related quizzes

All Aboard Amtrak quiz the question WHAT IS A SUPERLINER? The correct answer is not correct. While Superliners are used on western routes, they are also used on the CL and AutoTrain, both eastern trains.

    National Parks

The Capitol Limited stops in Harper's Ferry, WV. The best lodging is the Hilltop House. However, at this time the hotel is undergoing a renovation to be completed 2011. If you visit their web page they have recommendation of other close by lodgings. http://www.hilltophousehotel.com/

    Discount codes for cruise passengers

I know that NCL says to contact the Amtrak Group Desk. As to other cruise lines you ought to call their reservation number and ask.

    WMATA Red Line Collision

This is from METRO's Rail & Bus Service page as of 8:06pm. Guess they don't watch the news. Disruption at Fort Totten. Trains are turning back at Rhode Island Ave & Silver Spring due to a train experiencing mechanical difficulties outside of Ft. Totten. Shuttle service has been established.

    Philly to washington

When I worked in DC many years ago there was a guy in my office that actually did that everyday, but from Wilmington. When asked why he said it's cheaper to live in Wilmington. He always looked like he never slept.

    Sanford Auto Train Station

When I was there this past December they had some artwork on display showing what the new station would look like. Mostly it would compliment the appearance of the Lorton station. The waiting area will be significantly larger and the area where they would bring out vehicles will be completely...

What are you doing on National Train Day? May 9th

Anyone else get a postcard from Amtrak? I got an over sized card on Saturday announcing the event. Never got any email from them. If I bring the card with me I get a special souvenir. Doesn't say what it is. If anyone will be in DC this Saturday there's also an open house of many European Union...

    Business class on Palmetto #89/90

That certainly explains the difference in service. Maybe the description of BC for the Palmetto ought to be changed to read "BC passengers may obtain soft drinks, coffee/tea in the Cafe at no additional charge". When the description in the schedule states that passengers are offered such one...

    Business class on Palmetto #89/90

As promised here's my experience. The attendant helped me get my suitcase on board which was the last thing he did for me without having to be asked. In fact he did little for anyone. Although that might be because he apparently was also the cafe attendant. BC has leather seats arranged 2-1. I...

    Business class on Palmetto #89/90

As I posted earlier this week, I'll be on the Palmetto tomorrow morning from WAS to RMT in BC. The reason I went with BC is to avoid having to hunt for a seat in coach. I've had some bad experiences on a few LD trains with other passengers hogging space and filling up the luggage racks...

    Business class on Palmetto #89/90

I will be on 89 in BC this Thursday from WAS to RMT. I paid only $20 extra for BC. I may not have access to PC until I return home. So if I remember I'll post something here.

    Sleeper Car Trips

The water on the AutoTrain is downright awful. Tastes like it came from rusted pipes. We bring our own bottled water.
