    Future of Amtrak???

The revenue stream from Auto Train in 2013 was over 75million. So far through June it's almost 62 million. So GML wants to give that up and disperse the equipment to other trains that earn much less. Dispersal of the equipment and discontinuance of the train will not save the costs Amtrak...

    Future of Amtrak???

Unfortunately Ryan, this is a site full of opinions. Some we agree with and some we do not. You seem to disagree with my opinions completely and follow me around wanting citations and details. You will never get them from me. I spent a lot of time analyzing these trains and you can do the...

    Future of Amtrak???

LOL, so what you are saying is you believe Amtrak's numbers. The Auto Train makes a ton of money. It way more than just covers it's operating costs. Amtrak is on a mission to get Congress to cover it's LD loses, that is the loses it calculates, so why not load them up with overhead. It wants...

    Future of Amtrak???

If you want to see the future of Amtrak just look at their performance reports. The July reports are out. The Northeast Corridor was in the black to the tune of $414 million dollars. The state run corridors lost $64 million and most of that was on the West Coast, the Pacific Surfliners...

Pricing anomaly for Sunset Limited roomette fare

What you can do is book the roomette from NOL to Del Rio, And then book a roomette from San Antonio to Tucson. That way you can just sleep through all the switching in SAS and move to your new car and roomette once all that is finished. Just let your car host know what you are doing. I did...

    Future of Amtrak???

Jim they are only big losers on an individual fare or costs per rider basis. Overall their costs are less. The biggest losers are the CZ, EB, CS and SWC

    Future of Amtrak???

Amtrak as it exists now has no future other than the NEC. Short corridor trains are the states responsibility and they will go with the lowest bidder to operate them. The LD trains are running on borrowed time, particularly the western ones, as no Superliner equipment orders have been made or...

    Diners for long-distance day trains?

I tell you what Venture Forth. You order a copy of the European Rail Timetable and peruse the hundreds of trains listed in there and tell us how many have full diners and do a year to year comparison. I just don't have the time nor do I care. I have been there and ridden the European trains...

    Diners for long-distance day trains?

Hope just seems to spring eternal on here. Diners are disappearing everywhere and especially in Europe as more and more routes become high speed. Even the overnights are disappearing and they don't carry diners nor do any of.the regionals.

    Diners for long-distance day trains?

Diners cost too much to run. The European trains no longer use them either. They just have a 'bistro' car that serves sandwiches, drinks and snacks. It can be manned by a single person.

    Dallas Houston Run Time

Well William, the bus connection at Longview works just fine for the dozen or so passengers a day that use it and it's much faster. I used it last year and it works just fine. The Houston -Dallas train was a bone they threw us after they took off the Lone Star. They paid the SP a bunch of...

    Dallas Houston Run Time

Well George, I did use that term meaning 'mixed freight'. We used to call them 'junk trains' as they have a little bit of everything. I have no idea what the 'new' railfans call them.

    Dallas Houston Run Time

They appear to be using the track for outbound mixed trains, probably overflow from the line out of Spring. Both lines come back together at Navasota. They do maintain the track in decent condition, but it's nothing special and the signaling on the line is just block signals. Sidings are hand...

    Amtrak's Pioneer

It's a beautiful trip. I rode it in 1962 on the UP's City of Portland going to the Seattle Worlds Fair. On that trip we also took the Sam Houston Zephyr out of Houston, the Texas Zephyr Dallas to Denver, a GN train from Portland to Seattle and Seattle to Vancouver, BC, the Canadian from...

TxDOT puts out feelers to replace Amtrak running the daily Heartland F

The list on Train Web shows only 39940 and 39944 as being used on the Heartland Flyer. Both were later sold. Both cars were from the 1956 order. Corridor Capital has 50 of them. "With one critical exception: Corridor Capital owns or controls 50 of the finest railroad passenger cars ever...

TxDOT puts out feelers to replace Amtrak running the daily Heartland F

I know there are a bunch of them in some yard in Illinois, but they had to have spent a bunch of money fixing up the three or four they used for the HF. Did they just send these back to that yard also are does Amtrak still have them stashed away somewhere? How many Hi-Levels does Amtrak still...

TxDOT puts out feelers to replace Amtrak running the daily Heartland F

I believe we are misinterpreting the term 'minority' as used by our forefathers in drafting the Constitution. They knew nothing of gays, blacks, Asians, womens, Hispanics, etc., rights as they are discussed today. Minority then was referring to small states vs large states, various voting...
