    Commentary for guests

If you are a guest, become a member. Before 2005, I had never traveled Amtrak. Since then, I have reached Amtrak Guest Rewards Select +. Train travel is special. I love LD trains when I have the time available. 2005-2011, even as a high mileage, high dollar LD train traveler, I always...

    Stuck on Stupid Question

I have met many of you at the last Gathering. Give me grief, but I have alternated from a sleeper bedroom passenger to a first class flyer. It started with a $6k quote SPK-MIA. I am still a railfan. Last weekend I made a stupid choice. I did a 2X Hyatt award. 20k miles. I had 25k in the...

    Coast Starlight Diner Car

The parlor car was out of order both south and north for my 4/10 and 4/13 trips. On the 13th, it was equipment I have never seen. Bench seets at both ends with a bar station near the middle. The northbound, it was a standard sightseer car. Dinner on the southbound was superb.

    Good and bad SCAs

Just completed SPK-LAX in a bedroom. Jaime southbound on 11 was good. George northbound was great. Meals in room were timely. Filled my small ice chest several times. He was integral in helping me upgrade to add the adjacent room (bedroom suite). Opening the door was great. I did this...

    Crossing long distance trains

My experience has been that the southbound Coast Starlight waits at or near San Suis Obispo for the northbound to pass. Why is it always the southbound that has to step aside? Today I was on 11 in SLO. After leaving Seattle nearly two hours late we arrived in SAC early and left SAC on time...

CS 14 connection with EB 28

I am traveling north on 14 in a couple of weeks and see that the CS has been running pretty tight with the depature of the Builder recently. Any AU members have any recent experience with getting bustituted from KFS because of the anticipated PDX arrival times? Status for train 14...

    Amtrak Status Maps

Right now, three trains listed on Amtrak Status Maps have a purple stripe at the top and bottom of the train number. Click on those trains, and an engine number is listed. It is not listed on all other trains. What is the significance?

    OMG- I have flown again

Since 2005, I have taken the train, even when more expensive or inconvenient. This weekend, I fly Alaska Air SPK-SEA RT in first. About the same cost as a bedroom. Was a fun diversion.

    Recent lateness of Coast Starlight

Is this a result of track work, or??? I am talking about more than the two hour delays in origination departure times. I am traveling on the CS southbound and northbound in February, after the track work is scheduled to end. I would rather not arrive in LAX after midnight or miss my EB...

    Guulish experience

I met the legendary Guul yesterday. His SCA service was amazing. He told me that SPK had no red caps (I know that) and carried my bags all the way to the cab.

    Missing miles questions

I traveled SPK-SEA on train 7 on 12/23 and SEA-SPK on train 8 on 12/24. Today my return miles for the 24th posted but not the outbound miles on the 23rd. 1) Isn't it unusual that the return points posted first, especially since 7 terminates in Seattle and 8 went all the way to CHI after I...

    Sleep Machine with Train Sounds

With some frequency, I have trouble getting to sleep at home (both initially and back to sleep after a predictable early wake-up at about 3:00 a.m.) because I am laying there thinking of business related issues. In the past, I have used my bedroom TV + sleep timer set at 30-60...

Amtrak Cascades SEA to/from Olympia, WA

I will be on a multi-day business trip to SEA then south to OLY next month, before circling back. Looking up the OLY station on the Amtrak site, it looks like there is no baggage service in OLY. I assume that means both south and northbound. Anyone have any experience on that routing? I...

Revisiting Early Boarding for Sleeper Passengers

In SEA, they board sleepers through a separate gate; early. IN PDX, they board early through the Metropolitan Lounge. In SPK, there is one gate. My experience is that more often than not, an attendent comes down and seeks out sleeper car passengers to board early. Since all boarding times...
