Does Amtrak know how trains work?

If I'd be a terrorist i would blow up a french TGV, a german ICE or perhaps a russian Sapsan or an indian Rajdhani, or eventually a commuter train around NYC (wait, no, they do the job already by themselves) but certainly not the EB, CZ or SWC. Also the whole toilet trick does not really work...

Amtrak Is a Tax-Sucking Behemoth That Deserves to Die

Just think of this: Every time you park your car somewhere on public grounds (a thing that happens mostly in cities), you get a subsidy by the city. The city could also rent out these grounds for things such as new buildings, food stalls or even parking lots you 'd have to pay for. Local...

Two weeks until my first long distance trip!

I have to correct that. We managed to successfully get ourselves and two backpacks with stuff for about two weeks into a roomette without getting an unconfortable feeling. Checking your luggage is nevertheless advised. I never felt like having snacks between meals, and drinking water is also...

    Honeymoon on Amtrak

I think that honeymoon on Amtrak is a nice Idea, I spent several weeks traveling by Amtrak with my Girlfriend and she's still my girlfriend. However having all the money spent on train travel, she is not yet my wife. :P We travelled in a Roomette which we found to be big enough for both of...

    Empire Builder vs. Sunset Limited

I've ridden both and If you must choose, then it's certainly Eastern Montana vs. West Texas. In fact: I prefer the EB, but the Sunset Limited has it's charms too. So my recommendation is: 1.) If you want to have ridden every LD-Train one day, then definitely go for the Sunset Limited 2.) If...

    Chicago Metropolitan Lounge

Hey, there's no article on "Amtrak Lounges/Metropolitan Lounges/Acela Lounges" on Wikipedia. Could you folks go ahead and write one? My experience with the whole Lounge thing is fairly limited. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amtrak

On your itinerary: I did nearly the same in 48 days, my itinerary was: NYP-Charleston-Savannah-Baltimore-Washington-Philadelphia-Boston-Washington-Chicago-West Glacier-Seattle-Oakland-(Ferry) San Francisco- Sacramento (including Yosemite NP via Merced, day trip)-Denver-Chicago-St.Louis-Los...

    Quality Inn New Orleans

About the Hotel: Nice place, albeit a bit generic, has useful facilities (laundry). About walking: I felt perfectly safe when walking to and from the station, the walk will take you about 10mins

Getting to the city in Savannah and Charleston (SC)

I paid about $15 in Savannah and $ 35 in Charleston. The cab in Charleston was so shabby I decided to use the public transport system ($2) in order to get back to the station. The bus stop is quite close to the railway station and the area isn't very dangerous during daytime (there's virtually...

Bringing back the Pioneer and North Coast Hiawatha?

There is absolutely no way bringing back those trains. especially the Ogden-Wyoming-Denver route is quite boring (landscape-wise) and will attract as many customers as a fridge dealer in Nunavut, Greeenland would. In other words: the idea is completely nuts, although I like the idea of getting...

    Boarding in Chicago

On the Empire Builder they reserve seats for groups of a certain size (like 2,4,6, etc.). That means that even an Amish Family of about 8 can travel together. Just be on time for boarding. If a room was out of your budget, you might be able to get a Family Bedroom on board at the lowest bucket...

    Where is LARP?

They'd better use a good LART in order to correct the attitude towards Amtrak in places like Washington. :P

Trip info southwest chief - California Zephir

Stay in Albuquerque, as the station is far more central than in Santa Fe, but do a daytrip to Santa Fe by the new commuter railway NMRailrunner. For Grand Canyon: A day is enough (stay as late as possible) if you don't want to go hiking, if your plannings include hiking make it more. The Grand...

AMTK-Excutive Sleeper? and Sleeper car set off service

Wasn't there once in the eighties such a thing as a BOS-NYP Sleeper? In Europe this setting off is only done by the swedish railways, the point of set off is Stockholm main station.

How well do the showers work or dont work in sleepers?

Always remember: there's another shower in the next car. So if the shower is dirty or not working, just head for the next sleeper or crew dorm. (AFAIK this won't work on a few trains like for example the Cardnal)

Good places to eat on the Southwest Chief route

Whatever your choice may be. For breakfast head to the diner and not to the lounge car.

    Routes Amtrak shouldn't bring back?

Any route west of Chicago. There are not enough people in that area (with the exception of California/Oregon/Washington maybe parts of Texas).

    Routes Amtrak shouldn't bring back?

There would be definitely a market for an overnight SFC (EMY/OKJ) - LAX train.
