    Train history question

Thanks Bill! That was it. I found this little article that chronicles the history of the Sunset Limited. Sunset Limited History

    Train history question

As a five year old in 1964 I took a train from New Orleans to Houston. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Amtrak. Does anyone know what service it may have been?

    Dinner question

I did what Alice mentioned. I am diabetic and I just ordered off the menu and ate around what I couldn't have. For the flat iron steak, the only no-no was the baked potato. The steak, veggies, and salad were OK for me. I also broght diabetic-friendly snack bars to supplement my meals.

Crescent #19 Trip Report from a Newbie Rider

My train ride from Washington DC to Slidell, LA. October 26/27, 2008 Aside from taking a train from New Orleans to Houston when I was five years old in 1964, and a two hour ride last year from DC to Philly, this is my first real adventure on Amtrak. The reason for this trip is to return home...

    Dinner question

I am leaving tomorrow on the southbound Crescent out of WAS at 6:30pm. Will I be served dinner after boarding or should I eat something before?

    Viewliner Ride Quality...I'm Impressed!

While I am really not knowledgeable enough to weigh in on the rebuilding of train cars or spraying of fecal matter, I will let y'all know how my Viewliner roomette is on my trip Monday on the Crescent.

Which bed to use in roomette?

I am headed from WAS to SDL (just short of NOL). I am moving my daughter up to DC driving a Uhaul and towing her car. I have enough vacation leave so I thought I would try the train. My wife and I took a short trip on Amtrak from WAS to PHL last year and loved it! We were in Vermont two weeks...

    Do roomette doors lock?

Just wondering if I have to carry my laptop with me when I go to eat, etc?

Which bed to use in roomette?

I am traveling alone in a Viewliner roomette and was wondering is it possible to use the upper bunk and leave the seats usable? I was not sure if there is something mechanical that prevents this. I know I could wait and ask the attendant this, but I don't want to look like a complete newbie. :P...

New Rider - Questions about the Crescent

I lived in Slidell for 15 years. I love "egg water". We moved to Madisonville (25 miles away) after rebuilding and selling my house after Katrina. Slidell is closer and easier to get to from my home than downtown New Orleans. It's bad enough I have to work in the Big Sleazy. <_<

    Roomette Question

Thanks Alan! That has to be the fastest reply I have ever seen on a forum. BTW, I meant to post this thread under my user name of Teamfour. Sorry.

New Rider - Questions about the Crescent

Wow! Y'all are great with fast and informative replies. Thanks! OK, one more question and then I'm done. I will be traveling to Slidell, LA which, according to the route pamphlet, is only stopped at upon request. How do I request this? Is the fact that I purchased the ticket with Slidell as...

New Rider - Questions about the Crescent

I have been reading the "reserved seating" debate, and got to wondering about the statement above. Does the statement mean that as I get on the train in DC, the attendant will tell me to sit in seat #xx? What if I want a window? Does "greasing the palm" work like getting a good table in a...

Cost of a roomette - are they kidding?

Wow! I didn't intend to start such a lively discussion regarding fares, but the reading has been informative. I sure am glad the bucket concept doesn't apply to movie theaters! ^_^

Cost of a roomette - are they kidding?

Thanks. I am starting to understand the bucket system. I can't play with the dates as I am moving my daughter up to DC for a new job. I had planned on flying back, but I really want to explore travel by train. I guess coach wouldn't be bad for a single overnighter.

Cost of a roomette - are they kidding?

I am looking at traveling from WAS to SDL in a couple of weeks via the Crescent. I know I am booking the trip late, but I am a little shocked at the price of a roomette. The coach fare is $125 but Amtrak then wants an extra $383 for the roomette. That's a lot of $$ for a place to sleep and a...

2 day layover in New Orleans

Visit the Aquarium of the Americas. It is probably the best aquarium next to the one in Monterey CA or maybe Atlanta. Also visit the new Insectarium. The D-Day museum is also not to be missed.
