    TEXRail Opens

Does that line still host freight? It looks like they use high level platforms (higher than 8") on both sides.

    New LD Locomotive Order Placed

How many units are needed for non-state Corridor routes? Basically the shuttles, NER (Mass and VA), Carolinian, Pennsyvlvanian...am I missing any? (technically the latter are state corridor routes, but they largely use P42s/P40s from the national pool)

Options for 7 Train to NJ

Would it be cheaper to tie PATH into the subway? You'd have to modify PATH's loading gauge, but would that be better than a new tunnel?

    Three in, Three out.

For Atlanta, 6:30, 7, and 7:30. That gets you the bulk of the commuters as most jobs start between 8 and 9. Outbound is 5, 5:30, and 6:30 which gets the jobs letting out between 4:30 and 6..

Drugs moving by Amtrak - Southwest Chief? Texas Eagle?

"Well that's fine, my luggage and I will stay right here on the train, I hope you and your dog have a ticket."

    Next Gen TGV Duplex

With Japan's ingenuity, I'm actually surprised they haven't introduced a full two-level Shinkansen with two-level platforms negating the need for a lot of internal stairways (would still have to exist, just not as many).

    Amtrak to passengers: Keep Out!!

I don't think the issue above is not being open in the station, it's refusing to open until Alexandria. Once the train starts to move, HEP won't be a problem unless there is an actual problem as the engine change is either done, or the train is a runaway and now has bigger problems than a grumpy...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

Because they're still diesels, each with half the horsepower rating of an HHP-8.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

I really hope they keep the hippos captive to certain trains, otherwise, either the Charger-hauled trains will all be late, or the hippo-hauled trains will be early and have to sit, or simply be run at a lower speed than they're capable of.

    Alan Burden (AlanB)

Rest In Peace Alan. I only got the honor of meeting you once, when OTOL came to Atlanta in 2011 (I think) but I have enjoyed your knowledge, and presence in this community for years. Condolences to your family and friends.

    SunRail's southern expansion

Just now seeing this, and dang, that's basically hourly service throughout the day.

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

Amtrak has made no moves toward having permanent checkpoints at all stations. The tsa and their ilk come and run a circus every now and then, but that's it, and I haven't even heard of anything nearly as intrusive as brightline on Amtrak in quite some time.

I'm curious why ripping out the existing Long Bridge is on the table, is it in bad condition?

    amtrak crescent delays

With the consistently incredibly late trains, are they able to service and turn the properly at NOL and NYP? I know 20 has a scheduled turnaround of just over 24 hrs at NYP, while 19 has a scheduled turn of around 12 hours. I know one year they cancelled the Auto Trains for a few days just to...

Equipment Order in the works this year (2018)?

If we could go back in time, or send the information we have now back to the designers of the day, I'm sure the NEC would have been built to accommodate Superliner-type cars. The oldest reference I can find with a quick Google to bilevel railcars is the 1950s with the gallery style commuter...

    Tropical Storm Alberto service impacts

Being "sub-tropical" is little more than a scientific formality, and it's already a sub-tropical storm, no longer a depression. Peak winds are currently forecasted to reach 60-65mph, just under hurricane strength. The headline-maker with Alberto is definitely going to be the rain, but expect...

    amtrak crescent delays

That and people that might be thinking about a trip, won't take it due to the delays. With my raise this year, I was considering a trip to New York from Atlanta, but with the Crescent's poor performance, I'm not even considering it.

Equipment Order in the works this year (2018)?

I don't know, but I lean toward not thinking so. I'm pretty sure that high voltage cables are allowed between semi-permanently coupled cars in a married pair, like the A and B cars of an M8 as it looks from every pic I can find that M8 pairs run with only one pan up per pair. I can't see why a...
