Rail Pass vs multiple coach fares

2 years ago i booked a rail pass journey from NYP -> DC -> Chicago (cardinal) -> Austin -> Seattle -> Portland, OR -> Denver -> Baltimore I booked in late may for a journey in mid july with no extra costs. I guess i got lucky?

Is it worth going Cross Country in Coach or Roomette?

coach is a ton better with a companion , but depending on when you book, you might also be able to get a seat row for yourself, and then it isn't too bad at all. But.. YMMV (your mileage may vary)

    Abbreviations, etc.

I was new here once, and i didn't find it that hard at all to look up what i couldn't figure out. I had barely ever seen passenger trains either. (none in norfolk or virginia beach) feel free to try to take some initiative yourself as well via google or amtrak.com, etc. ... just like i did

Why should I ever consider travelling Amtrak

it's because you were so abrasive with us. Who have NO official affiliation with amtrak, It would be easy to assume you were abrasive with them. Not sure why you would treat us, who you don't even know, so terribly.

    AMTRAK Rail Passes

if you're goign to ask for help, at least try to format your request in a readable way. Also, this shouldn't necessarily be your first stop for assistance.. other folks actually get paid to do that ...

    This is not a ticket

actually, on newer busses you can actually show them the info directly off your phone, no need to print it. Seems like amtrak is going that route too as they modernize. I know they are in the process of making the tickets more "electronic" but i haven't yet read the details of the plans

    Backpacking Across America in Coach

i did this with the rail pass 2 years ago by myself. NYP -> WAS -> CHI(cardinal) -> AUS (4 nights) -> CHI -> SEA (2 nights) -> PDX (13 nights) -> SAC -> DEN (1 night) -> CHI -> WAS (Capitol Limited) -> BAL You're lucky that you're doing it with somebody you know and don't mind cuddling up...

    Home & Apartments overlooking Trains

the apartments along Mount Royal Ave in baltimore, md (or the artsy warehouse building known as the Copy Cat). I lived there, but few of the pictures i took are any good.

Why not assigned seats in reserved coach?

because they haven't truly implemented electronic tickets, (although it is in the plan). Also, if you recall, not all stations are staffed and tickets can be bought on board. When those 2 things (and who knows what else) comes together, it might happen. PS: not all of us want assigned seats.

    Anti-train ad on the AUF

yes, it's based on the keywords as well. we're on an amtrak site, so things related to amtrak show up, pro or anti

    Cardinal 51????

if you look like you're 15 or 16 and you're alone, you will be IDed on the train itself. And you're only fed if you bring money to buy food or bring your own food. the amtrak website talks quite a bit about both policies. you should read it

    Trains from WAS to CHI

Yeah, the SSL is important to me. I'm a late nighter and the SSL is open all night :) I had some fun times playing cards and hanging out with my friends after 11pm. Unless i'm getting a sleeper, i would have no reason to choose any single level train unless my goal is just to "get somewhere"...

    Rail Pass Question

the most active posters tend to prefer sleepers here it seems, so rail passes aren't as useful to them

    Gluten Free on Empire Builder

if you call amtrak 72 (or 36) hours in advance, they can probably come up with something for you to eat in the dining car. They do the same for vegans and kosher food eaters. I can't speak for the food in the cafe car, but you can ask them what is gluten free there

    Traveling solo

I went from NYC -> DC -> Chicago (cardinal) -> Austin -> Chicago -> Seattle -> Portland, OR -> Sacramento -> Denver -> Chicago -> DC (Capitol Limited) -> Baltimore 2 years ago.
