Pittsburgh Amtrak Station past, present and future

For the record, Pittsburgh is still one of my favorite cities to visit. I had a great visit with one of my kids, taking the Capital sleeper from chicago in, spent the day, then the capital sleeper back. So much to do, in a nice compact city. But not a good impression being dropped off at the...

    Boarding at an unstaffed station

I am 100% sure he would. But obviously WEM sees 10 amtrak trains a day, and he can only volunteer for a percentage of those. But on cold days, people will linger in the station, but the poor design located far from the platform is just a problem. POR has a sorta similar disconnected station...

    Boarding at an unstaffed station

When I used to commute into boston on the Downeaster, there was one unstaffed that always caused issues. WEM It is unstaffed, but there is a very nice station. Problem is, the station sits about 100 feet behind the platform, not connected. At least once a week, the train would stop and load...

    MBTA and other faregates discussion

In general, I think its a great idea. Amtrak downeaster bugs aside. Every year, I'll take some of my kids to boston for a day of railfanning. Riding all the subways, trolleys, bendy-buses, commuter rails, etc. Seeing odd stations, etc. I've done this for nearly 20 years (great thing about...

    MBTA and other faregates discussion

Granted, the entire zoo itself is on one steep hill. So, you will walk down the hill, then back up, then back down to the "lower station". Fine for me, but when I'm dragging my kids I'll usually grab a stroller so they don't have to make the walk back up. However, one year I thought I'd be...

Most Beautiful Train Stations in the US

I think the first time I road from WAS to POR, I made the mistake of getting off at BBY instead of BOS.... and I was alarmed. Dark, damp, smelly, and noisy. I love large, grand stations. Many in the east still in operation. Even New Haven and Springfield are wonderful. One oddball that...

    Lounge Access-without same day ticket

I had the same question- I'm flying into NYC on business for the day, but wanted to check out the new Moynihan station, and the lounge often has the only "clean" bathrooms in the city.... and lately, bathrooms are hard to find. Usually I'm taking the train into NYP, so I'll always have a...

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

I agree. It is not as serious as the common flu, and nowhere near as serious as the spanish flu. The media's #1 job is to sell airtime for commercials, and more viewers means more money. Thats why the media is screaming "apocalypse" but the medical industry is say, "meh, get your flu shot...

Best roomette on the Capitol Limited

I meant from the Cafe-thing. We had the beef, and it was fine. But microwaved.

Best roomette on the Capitol Limited

My "dark alley" was meant to be tongue in cheek, but the escalator does spit you out between 2 large buildings, in a semi-covered parking lot that is not well lit. The connectcard machine is literally on the other side of the former Penn Station, in a ridiculously inconvenient place. So...

Best roomette on the Capitol Limited

But unlike Buffalo or Cleveland, Pittsburghs grand station is just above amtrak.... but converted to an upscale apartment building. I was more disappointment that I followed the escalator down, right outside into a dark alley. We then walked into the waiting room thinking we took a wrong turn...

Best roomette on the Capitol Limited

I've usually picked room #2. Its upper level (quieter, better view), and but close to shower, stairs, luggage (lower) bathrooms, and coffee machine (upper). The attendant is often in #1, so you are first to get service, etc. I take my microwave meals, and sit in the lounge. On a side note...

    NYP Acela lounge experience

I've never seen food or drinks at NYP. I figured either it ran out or the staff never bothered. Fortunetly, Boston South Station is always full. Ton of snacks, free bottled drinks, news papers, etc. So I stuff my bag! The BOS staff do look at me.... then I point out, I'm going to NYP

How are Amtrak train cars in Winter?

We road the LSL last year during the record cold period. The rooms were comfortable but the shower room was ice cold. I'd let the hot water try to warm it up, but I think the drain was frozen as well. What a mess that made.

Storage lockers at NYP and/or GCT?

I'll often get an AcelaClub pass, simply to store my luggage. Very useful when I'm arriving in a city early in the morning, and won't be checking in until late at night. Or I might be just day tripping, and hoping on the train to the next city.

    Boston South Station

So they got rid of that TV section in the middle?   That was a great spot while waiting for my connection with my kids.   Still the only Club that seems to always be stocked with snacks

    Boston South Station

Another nice thing about the AGR passes, is they also cover your immediate family travelling with you. THose special boston passes only cover you. Each family member needs there own. And, the AGR passes would cover both ends of your trip as a "day pass", obviously not the boston pass. However...

    Downeaster News

On a negative note, the town of Kennebunk has declared a few days ago there will be no stop in Kennebunk.  This was after nearly 6 years of saying its approved, just waiting for funding, permits, constructions, etc.  Then it devolved into fighting over money, location, etc. Its too bad.

    Great Dome 2018 Schedule

That spot in the front of the dome is my absolute favorite place to ride. Hopefully when (?) it gets fixed, they don't restrict people from sitting near the front window.

Drugs moving by Amtrak - Southwest Chief? Texas Eagle?

I remember a few years ago, the local station SAO was in the news because a drug dealer got off the train, and forgot to grab his large backpack full of drugs. He was caught when he tried to retrieve it from lost and found at POR station. That story led to other stories about how all the stops...
