whn you rode Zephyr, which side were even numbered roomettes?

The majority of my runs, even was south, but not always. Sometimes the roomettes were adjacent to to the diner, sometimes the bedrooms. It all depends on the car orientation. This goes for #6 as well as #5.

SCAs, the good and the bad

Margo, One of the few great trips I've had on #30, I had a Darryl as an SCA. He was animated and knew the history of the route as well as seeing to the little things. Hope your Darryl was not the Darryl of a few years ago. Burn-out happens to them occasionally. I had Brenda once on #27 CHI...

How far in advance to book an AGR ticket?

A couple years ago, my wife and I booked a room for same day departure on the SW Chief. (Galesburg > LAX > Oceanside) We had a death in the family. Thankful we had points at our disposal. The ride was excellent therapy and helpful, in that we traveled to Southern Cal in the transdorm. By its...

    Emergency brake pulled

Two instances instantly come to mind for me on this topic. My wife and I were on the California Zephyr #6 in September of 2007. A cement truck decided to proceed across the tracks into a quarry at Rifle, Colorado. I know the engineer had already sounded his approach warning and he put the train...

    Crap on the Cap

It is outragous for a member of the crew to have come down on you for the time you choose to get up in the morning. They were still open for service, so first and foremost, that was none of their business. Second, it IS their job to find a seating time for you. The only thing going for #30...

    Crap on the Cap

I totally agree that first seating avoids some of the service issues. I too have had issues on the eastbound CL (more than the WB) I have also had Daryll as an SCA and yes, he is incredible! I have also had SCA Larry, more than once, and he actually went to bat for me on a dining car service...

AGR Redemption - 2 Adults plus Infant

The Family bedroom is the same redemption as a bedroom. That said, AGR and Amtrak itself has been fantastic in accomodating my grandson both prior to reaching the age of two and thereafter. (he just turned three) I have a redemption for a roundtrip two zone to Florida for a bedroom. My son...

Can passengers be kicked off train for refusing police search?

It was a thread exactly like this a few years ago why I disappeared from this very useful forum. I had my 4th amendment rights violated in Reno on the CZ. Not realizing my bags were searched until after the fact when we unpacked upon returning home. We boarded in SAC so all the luggage racks...

Voice of Support for Amtrak in Senate

Very disapointed to see that neither of my (Iowa) Senators signed. I can assure you, they WILL hear from both my wife and myself! (Charles Grassley and Tom Harkin, if anyone is interested) :angry2:

    Who's on my train?

Myself, wife and grandson will be boarding #3 in Fort Madison, Ia on the 4th of July. Thanks to Amtrak's great (liberal) ticket changing policies we had to make some changes. We were originally scheduled to board this train in Chicago, coming off another run, that had to be changed as well.

    Train cancelled and rebooked

Could not agree with you more on this point. I do not do third party res. or the lowest cost nonrefundable room. Just asking to eat the cost going that route!

    nice 2 zone redemption

Congratulations on an excellent booking! As for my wife and I, doing Oceanside, CA to NOL via Chicago mid July. Pacific Surfliner, three days on the TE and connecting with the City of New Orleans. That's the best I could come up with for my two zone award, made last December. Have an...

    Los Angeles Union Station

First, welcome to the board! As far as getting to your train, there are Redcaps that can take you directly train side by motorized cart. Ask any uniformed Amtrak employee to direct you to one, if one is not within eyesight upon arrival to LA Union Station. I have found it is well worth it to...

    Chicago Union Station Restaurants

When in need of a meal in CUS, Corner Bakery is where we go! Quick in and out, usually take it down to the Metropolitan Lounge.

    Freight trains collide in iowa

Just googled it myself. Article with the most info I found came from the Chicago Tribune. The crash occured around 7 a.m. which put #6 right behind it. Sad day in railroading. My heart goes out to the crew members that were killed, families.

Newbie Questions-Texas Eagle / Sunset Lmt? I'm confused

 Doh! As far as the Sunset Limited being entirely tri-weekly. I always see it from my northern perspective down to San Antonio. Mea Culpa

    train speed

If you are referencing the Crescent, it's more causeway than bridge. It skirts around the eastern side of Lake Ponchartrain. (water is on both side of the train) The actual bridge portion is somewhere around five miles. You have a view of the lake for around 15 minutes of the portion between...

Newbie Questions-Texas Eagle / Sunset Lmt? I'm confused

Hello Sarah and welcome to the board! You are correct in that children under 2 do not need a ticket. If you are in coach, your youngest can use an unoccupied seat provided it is not needed by a paying passenger. My soon to be one year old (at the time) traveled extensively with me in January...

    Rail Fares, Then vs. Now

Very nice Anderson! I have a folder full of spreadsheets containing data that probably is only interesting to me. You have shown that a low bucket sleeper fare is a better value today that pre-Amtrak, even better when you figure meal service is provided in the price of the fare...
