    VIA Canadian and the Canadians

Thinking of taking the Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto boarding on Christmas Day. Could this be fun or just a cold journey in poor weather with no views?

Tips for sleeping well on Amtrak

But peeking out can be part of the magic. Abiding memories of my Sunset trip a couple of years ago was waking and looking out at a totally dark Texas sky lit only by millions of stars, then again later as we crossed the bridge over the Amistad reservoir. Those rich memories were worth ten times...

    First time Rider!

I travelled in 2019 as a 73 year old UK female newbie alone from Austin via the Texas Eagle and Sunset to Tacoma on the CS in bedrooms (to avoid shared facilities at night), and loved every second. Not a moments concern about safety (tho I had had some dire warnings from US family members that...

Watching the Weather from a train

It was a wonderful trip - I went from heat and drought in Western Texas on the SL through to balmy sunshine glittering on the sea in California snow in Oregon (the photos are of Chelmut area) then pouring rain in Portland. Here’s a clip from the video I tried to post plus the run in to Portland...

Ooops... apparently it snows in Flagstaff

We stayed at Flagstaff and then the Grand Canyon in mid December. There was snow, enough to make the views stunning but not enough to cause problems with our hired SUV. The real plus is that virtually no one else was there - incredibly we had the south rim to ourselves save for one other couple...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

And for those of us who come from abroad to enjoy the long distance trains, it just isn’t practiceable to add a cooler to our existing luggage or to cart enough food for a three or five day trip. Nor do we usually have the knowledge as to where to fill up between trains or where to hop off to...

Sunset Limited - New Orleans to El Paso 6/3-6/4

Well spotted! The first is a dawn view when crossing over Walk Lake/Amistad Reservoir west of Del Rio, the second, as you say is from the High Bridge. Would have posted the locations originally but tapped send too early.

The airplane seat recline controversy heats up again

Some of the budget airlines, such as Ryanair, in the EU/UK have solved the problem of potential disputes by using fixed seating which is fine for short flights. Medium to long haul I will no longer fly economy since a Boston/Heathrow experience when the guy in front dropped his seat back...

    From Austin to Tacoma

Some may remember my anxious questions on a Sunset forum about delays and missed connections so I thought I would let anyone interested know what a great trip I had - aided by hints and tips on the various forums. I’d started off worrying not only about a possible same day missed connection at...

I wonder too if the way they have booked it is more expensive ......

    Late Sunset Limited (10/11/19)

Thanks everyone. I finally have my ticket and yes I’m booked all the way from Austin to LA on the 421 However what I am now concerned about is that it appears to have been booked as a multi city trip. Although there is one reservation number and I am not intending to stop over in LA the ticket...

Why trains instead of planes for long distance?

I also agree - I’m coming to the States from the UK in part just for the fun of riding the trains (Texas Eagle then Coast Starlight) I could easily have flown from Austin to Seattle in a day for sure but decided a trainride would be a good way for me as a solo traveller to see parts of the...

    Late Sunset Limited (10/11/19)

I’m booked on one ticket I believe, through to Seattle, my UK travel agent arranged it so I will get on to them and check, thanks. Can’t believe trains can be 8 hours late - that would pretty well be enough time to get from one end of the UK to the other!

    Late Sunset Limited (10/11/19)

I’m travelling Austin LAX next month, connecting with the Coast Starlight same day. It never occurred to me when booking that a 5 hour transfer time would be potentially insufficient. What if any assistance does Amtrak give to get delayed passengers on a through ticket onto the connecting train
