    Newbie traveling LFT - LAUS

I just did the Sunset Limited from New Orleans to Los Angeles about three weeks ago. Had a roomette sleeer. My only additional advice would be to bring one or two of those little hand sanitizers. Will help you stay germ free (at least your hands on a 48 our train trip.) Los Angeles Union...

List of meals served on all LD trains

Sunset Limited was OK. But feels really slow through Texas (because it is.) You pass this place in about seven seconds but I got a decent video of it when passing by: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prada_Marfa Personally in terms of beautiful scenery, my vote is for Grand Junction Colorado to...

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited El Paso Burrito Lady

I just keep mis-speaking. I mean the Chief. Burritos = El Paso = Sunset Limited Blankets/Pottery = Alburquerque = Southwest Chief I think one the drawbacks of our very long distance trains is that you really don't get to see lots of these smaller places. I remember in Europe a train was like...

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited El Paso Burrito Lady

I was tired when I wrote the original post back at Lake Tahoe. I did mean Albuquerque about the vendors on the platform. I bought from them both ways when I took the Sunset Limited back in 2010/2011 and also had time to walk to a Thai restaurant and order takeout. Though I hadn't been to Dave's...

NEW Caledonian Sleeper is UK now running

Yep I chatted with Mark after my ship and rail voyage to Ukraine from NY back in 2012. Nice fellow. Amazing website for sure.

What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

Impressed you did the whole Trans-Siberian. Who did you book visas with/tickets?

List of meals served on all LD trains

Was on the Zephyr in 2017 and we were delayed 16 hours into Denver because of tornados that moved through Omaha before we got there. The whole train had all we could eat Krispy Kreme donuts and the famous Denty Moore stew that according to our car attendant separates the normally late Amtrak...

An ‘Ocean’ Mileage Run (with lots of photos!)

Does The Ocean line usually run on time?

I am on the Texas Eagle!! Yippee!!!

Thanks for this great write-up. I was actually on the Sunset Limited last Monday when I discovered this site and then found your post and was like "hey I think this guy is going to link up with our train in San Antonio." I signed up for an account but then by the time I got approved and had good...

What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

According to Wikipedia probably the bi-monthly Moscow to Pyongyang. Seem to recall someone who did a write-up once of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_train_services Realistically the Trans-Siberian (#2) and Trans-Manchurian (#3) are likely far more do-able than #1 on this list. My...

What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

I am typing this on my laptop as we have left Union Station in Chicago. So far the Wi-Fi seems pretty good on the Lake Shore Limited as well as the Crescent last week. Definitely needed on the west of Chicago trains in 2019. At the very least the LSL is so far cooler than the very terribly AC'ed...

What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

Thought I already did that. :) In all seriousness, which trip would you like the report on?

Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited El Paso Burrito Lady

Huge line for her burritos when we got off in El Paso. I didn't buy one but admit I probably missed out. Kind of surprising more longer stops don't have at least one small food vendor. Could make a nice chunk. Similar to the pottery/blanket sellers in Tucson.

    Southwest Chief #4 Service Disruption

I was on the Sunset Limited heading to LA that was the one that was in LA when the earthquake hit. Our car attendant thought they were reconnecting cars as she was getting read for the trip out to NO until she felt a huge jostle. Anyway they were like 8 hours late getting started and didn't pull...

What's the longest vacation you've taken by train?

Longest in the US is my current trip. NYC to NO to LAX. Visited my sister in LA. LA to SAC for a weekend in Tahoe with a long Lyft ride from SAC. Heading back tomorrow from Truckee via Zephyr with hopefully a few hours to chill in Chicago. Then on to the Lake Shore Limited. My longest train and...

Silver Star: What to do for meals without Diner?

Rode the Silver Star in 2016 with my father. Basically we went shopping at Publix before we got on in Miami with a bunch of snacks, jerky, bananas etc. I think we were a little heavy on the sweet stuff and a little light on the meaty stuff but it worked decently. I think that's the best call...
