Checked baggage on the Coast Starlight

I'm not familiar with Seattle specifically, but everywhere I've used or seen thruway you do have to collect your bags and take them to the bus.

    Question for the old timers

It's such a shame too given how nice the station in Cincinnati is. My wife went to graduate school at Xavier and only once did I take the cardinal to get there to visit her. The timings are just awful and the lack of daily service really limits your options.

    Question for the old timers

I am not personally old enough to remember the pre-Amtrak days, and I am a little bit curious as to the practicalities of travel back then. Specifically, I was wondering how one would handle booking tickets that required journeys on multiple railroads. If I wanted to get from NYP to LAX in 1950...

Someone didn't get the memo (Pepsi in Club Acela in WAS?)

Interesting. They sell both in the Piedmont vending lounges.

Connecting to NB Crescent in Greensboro NC

I take 20 to WAS and points north from CLT pretty regularly, and I have never once still been awake for GRO. On the bright side, they have a pretty nice station in Greensboro where you could probably find an open bench to attempt to sleep for a bit if you were so inclined. There are also several...

    #20 (12/31/19) Service Disruption

I saw over on a different board that the specific damage was that the pilot was bent into contact with the rail and that the NS MOW crew that initially responded didn't have a cutting torch or other suitable tool with them.

    Confounded by routes...

There is no Amtrak station in Davenport itself. The closest is GBB as mentioned above. Several options come up on the Amtrak website for trips GBB to RUD. Burlington, IA has service as well but fewer options as it's only served by the California Zephyr.

    Visualizing RR routes on maps

I love openrailwaymap, but it is really slow and sometimes the line names don't show up which can make it hard to figure out who owns a segment.

Closest mountain hotels/cabins to Amtrak in GA or SC? I'm in Jax FL

The closest you can get to mountains by train in the southeast are various points in VA if you're willing to travel a bit further. The Crescent and the western VA NERs both pass through some pretty nice scenery. As far as CLT goes, I live here and can make it to "proper" mountains in a little...

Taking 15-day Amtrak trip - Need hotel recommendations

I've found some pretty good deals at the Holiday Inn & Suites Chicago Downtown a few times in the past. It's right next to the Clinton Blue Line stop only four blocks south of Union Station. There are currently rates of $80 being advertised for tonight (but that's probably just to try to fill...

Long trip on coach with kids?

Just don't go into it expecting to be well-rested when you get to BOS. Best-case scenario is that your kids are deep sleepers who can sleep anywhere and they will be less tired and cranky than you upon arrival. A few generic tips for sleeping in coach. -Earplugs are basically required (think...

    Steam Engine Exhaust Color Question

Wood firing was what created the need for the distinctive funnel-shaped spark arrestor chimneys in many 19th century American locomotives. Coal fired locomotives of the era didn't produce as many embers and typically had a more conventional chimney arrangement.

Hoosier State tickets sales suspended for after June 30

The announced the end of service back in April. The state of Indiana pulled funding for the route. The congestion and low speeds North of Thornton due do a less than ideal routing have caused this route to be particularly noncompetitive with car travel. It is 5 hours one-way for a trip that...

    Florence SC train station info

It's the same route. The station is at the West end of the yard at the end of the CSX South End Subdivision where the Charleston subdivision begins and the SCCR connects to the main.

    Florence SC train station info

There really isn't much in Florence. I've never used the amtrak station, but I've driven through it plenty of times and am generally familiar with the area. Have you already bought tickets? It may be worth it to take the meteor to Charleston instead. That would get you some more sleep (4:51...

Advice for Son and me traveling on the Crescent

That should be a blast. I've never ridden the Crescent south of CLT, but the northern half of the route has always been nice. The scenery in Western Virginia on 20 is some of the best in the Southeast. The Charlotte skyline is also nice on the off chance you're still up at 1am and the train...
