Carbon footprint for various modes of transport

This type of comparison was popular during the 1970's. The simplest fallacy that kept occurring was the seating density assumed, but rarely footnoted. The other long-range fallacy was in assuming that all modes were used for the same purposes. That was discussed above, but beyond today's...

Proposal for moving VIA Rail out of Saskatoon to Warman

These cities were previously served by the Yellowhead Highway route of Greyhound Lines of Canada. The last rail passenger service was a Railiner from North Battleford into Edmonton in the morning and back in the evening. That's if you don't count the Royal Train for Queen Elizabeth and Prince...

They need to get it cleaned and turned ASAP.

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

Note to moderators - yes, this is from elsewhere, but it's intended for better understanding of ground corridors. Hanover central bus station to Berlin central bus station (which is on the west end) on the autobahn A-2 is 171 miles (276 km), the same as Portland curbside (near Union Station) to...

    Conductor Brad’s last ride

2014 - Brad borrowed a passenger's guitar and entertained passengers waiting for Train 5. My favorite Brad story is that when he was working the Cascades he talked two women out of having a fight as the train approached the Canadian border. We had visions of trying to figure out which...

That explains why the earthquake warning system was triggered. ;)

    California Thurway bus schedules

The bus schedules are shown in the corridor timetables. For buses connecting at Bakersfield, they're in the San Joaquin folder. I don't see El Segundo, but perhaps someone here can offer an alternative. My surmise is that as rail transit lines have been extended, the non-Union Station bus...

    Old American Railroad Maps

In 1917, almost every one of these lines had passenger service, some of it electrified -- and the state highway program was just getting started.

    Is Amtrak greener than flying?

It would be more realistic to compare long-distance sleeper travel with motor homes.

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

Here's the PDX to SEA line-up for Sunday, April 7th as of Thursday night. Note that Flix has restored their $3.99 service charge, included here, after trying a $4.50 service charge. Also, Flix has switched to fixed bottom rates for advance sales on the Cascades corridor. Weekday PDX<>SEA...

New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

It doesn't seem to have a bay or two for charter or Thruway or intercity buses.

Tracking FY 2024 Ridership and Finances

It is dependent on daily commuter and higher ed traffic. People working hybrid in office/out of office are still enjoying the service, but not every weekday. Then there are the well-publicized problems in San Francisco. AND on top of that a lousy terminal situation in the City.

    Hello

Enjoy your trip and enjoy visiting Denver. Union Station is close to the 105th parallel and it used to be about 5188 feet above sea level. The California Zephyr usually comes in on Track 4, but sometimes usesTrack 5. Now you know some trivia that your friends may not know! In the night...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

If you want bottled water, it'll be for sale in the lower level of the Sightseer Lounge car. Water is free from the car's tank and in over 50 years of sipping it, I've never had a problem. One tip: save your drink cup, because they may not be restocked.

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Somewhere in this thread I've posted an old newspaper clipping discussing slides and flooding from the current location (Felida) up to the Lewis River. The segment from Kalama to Vancouver was built in a hurry and has been problematic ever since.

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Of course, 3rd Street in Oakland, but I looked in the Open Railway Map at other likely places where WP engines would have led the train and did not see anything. Note to younger readers: before Amtrak, the California Zephyr on the Western Pacific bypassed Reno. The WP had a 33-mile long branch...

    Planes overhead

I followed the process - agonizingly slow - of building the new BER airport. Staying at a pension near old Schoenefeld in 2002, I could sympathize with the neighbors because so many of the Eastern European, Russian, and low-cost/charter flights were painfully noisy. Some had a screaming effect...
