    Sleeper accommodation discussion

For the last two summers we've taken the Empire Builder from Portland to Wis. Dells. We were in a bedroom the first trip, and a roomette on the second. The ladder couldn't be located on the first night in the bedroom so I had to use the sink as a foothold to get into the upper berth. The ladder...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

We had an enjoyable experience on the Empire Builder this summer and found the food overall, quite good. One exception was the quick takeout breakfast just before we arrived in Portland. We chose yogurt and a toasted bagel, except the bagel was nuked, not toasted. It was so tough I think it...

    Empire Builder Trip Report

Not to carry on too much about this subject, but the coach cars were especially interesting because the train was completely sold out (at least that's what we were told). It was quite the scene in the evening with all manner of body parts poking into the aisle as people tried to get comfortable...

    Empire Builder Trip Report

That's a good point, one I had forgotten to mention. The view out the rear is really interesting and mesmerizing. Brought to mind Ike or JFK waving to the crowds.

No, T told us her name, but she was kind and said "just call me T"

    Empire Builder Trip Report

Caution! I am not a writer and am not certain where to post this-perhaps a moderator can help? Trip report for Aug 2, to Aug 13 on The Empire Builder, train 28, and 27 from Portland,OR to Wisconsin Dells,WI. My wife and I had wanted to take another train vacation for some time, so we...

    Empire Builder discussion

We’re hopping on the Empire Builder tomorrow aft in Portland on our way to Wisconsin Dells, WI. On the way there we have a bedroom, and on the way back, a roomette. Do the bedrooms have a bathroom? The other question is about tipping. So when, how much, and how often? Thinking about the car...

29(7/25) hit a truck at grade crossing - now what?

Thanks much for that very good play by play report. We're leaving Portland on Aug 2 taking the EB (#28) to Wisconsin Dells, and returning on #27 on Aug 11. My wife was a railroad brat, her father having retired from UP as a district claims agent after 35 years. I've taken the EB several times in...

Various short trips around the Willamette Valley

Not to be too harsh with you, but I can guarantee that the volunteers who keep that train running (Oregon Coast Scenic Railway), don't consider it a "carnival ride". They have a large maintenance building at Rockaway Beach where you can go in and see which project they're working on. This...

Lesser known Railroad Museums in small towns

My favorite so far, is in Ely, NV. Ely is small at 4k population, but the museum/yard is quite large. The part I really liked, is that most of the facilities are open to visitors. We walked through the large shop where they repaired locomotives, and came upon a 14 yr old volunteer who was...

    Question about cross-country train trip

We too, just bought tickets on the EB to go from Portland, OR to Wisconsin Dells in August. Cost was $2529.20 (retired) plus $120.14 for the travel insurance. That includes the roomette. Not sure how the upgrades work but it sounds like it can be done practically up to departure time. Quite...

Which trains used these model of cars?

Rode the Hood River Valley Excursion (Oregon) yesterday and noticed these two cars on their grounds. Anyone know the history of these types?

    Trip suggestions (CA<->FL)

This post prompted a conversation with my "railroad brat" wife (her father was a district claims agent for UP for many years). I suggested many adventurous young people would be (are?) interested in coast to coast rail travel. She disagreed, saying young people don't have the history of rail...

    Yep, Gov. Tom McCall.

1.5 billion for Amtrak in stimulus with daily service mandate (Passed in Congress)

I think Defazio is a good guy and was my Rep while I lived in Eugene for many years. His opposition always brings in lots of outside $ during his elections. His '63 Dodge Dart was legendary.

Have You Made a Lifelong Friend on Amtrak?

Where in Central WI? I was raised on a dairy farm near Wisconsin Rapids, and my earliest railroad memory is of the Chicago & North Western crossing the road near the farm in about 1948. Have loved them ever since and have taken the Empire Builder between Oregon and Wisconsin several times.

Amtrak stations within a mile of a Casino? (w/real dice Craps)

Holy cow, what a bunch of high rollers we have here. Maybe we should have a casino car on Amtrak trains. They could support full service dining cars.

    Small plane discussion

I also did basic at Lackland, in August/September of '62 and boy was it hot! Then they put us on a train to Denver (Lowry Field) for 10 months of tech school. And yes, I too was in PATS for a few days running a floor buffer. Then another train (BN) to Chicago for 30 days leave before Glasgow...
