    Discontinued Ammenities

Both my 5 and 6 trains last month had overhead announcements stating footware had to stay on at ALL times while on the CZ.

    Seat Hogs in Sightseer Car

On my April '17 CZ trip I heard way more announcements about the SSL car and seating than I remember from my May '15 ride. There were more specific reminders this time that the seating was for ALL passengers and that there was to be no "saving" of seats for any longer duration than it would take...

    Sacramento Motels

RE: Davis... If you end up staying there be sure to eat at least one meal at Caffe Italia. You won't be sorry. https://sharkatz.wixsite.com/caffeitalia I understand there really was a "Guido".

    Wyoming Thruway

Gas station burritos and nachos would be gourmet bistro compared to the lasagna I bought on the Pioneer. (and way cheaper.) Based on the newest route literature I picked up during my layover at SAC valley station in CA, I would agree that SD appeares to be the only Amtrakless state (at least in...

Best Places to Visit Along the CZ and EB

Ditto to Glenwood Springs. Most coziest looking town along the CZ route from CO to CA. Here's a pic of their platform from my trip...

    Sacramento Motels

Yepp, I had planned on a Barnburner burger from Perko's during my 4-21 layover between the CZ and SJ in downtown SAC, but ended up walking an extra block to an under construction Subway for a 12" Spicy Itallian meal. At least I had a TOGO cup to take Dr. Pepper back to the station in. Price...

    Wyoming Thruway

Powder river stage (a.k.a. Arrow) would be my guess. I hope someday they'll bring back the Pioneer. That was the first Amtrak I ever took (to SLC). Worst lasagna ever, though.

Location of the sleeping cars on the CZ

5 CZ train on 4-20-17 had Engine 1 Engine 2 Baggage Crew? Sleeper 1 Sleeper 2 Diner SSL/Cafe Coach 1-where I was. Coach 2 6 train on return was even longer. I'll sort it out after I get pics loaded to Photobucket.

Car Location on the Lakeshore & California Zephyr

Just came back from CA on the CZ. Sleepers were forward and coaches were in back on both 5 and 6. (Departed DEN on 4-20.) More later after I upload pics including a rare one from rear door of back coach.

National Dining Car Specials/New Menus (April '17)

That's exactly why I'm freezing some of my bottles, so I have plenty of ice and cold drinks without imposing on anyone. The only reason I mentioned the diabetic situation at all would be for someone who was up against uncooperative staff after properly making a request for ice. BTW, I happen to...

National Dining Car Specials/New Menus (April '17)

RE: ice on LD trains... My diabetic father has been able to get ice on Amtrak by telling staff he needed it for the mini cooler where he stores his insulin. Perhaps someone could try this approach should they run into a reluctant attendant. For my CZ coach trip next week I'm freezing a few...

Weather/temps on the California Zephyr in April & other questions

My usual socks with sandals combination (see avatar) will be plenty comfortable to sleep in this time in coach class on the CZ as it was in 2015 when I was fortunate to share a roomette.

    California Zephyr consist

I'll be boarding the westbound CZ next week and will report on the sequence.

No guarantees I'll have it posted until after my arrival!

Weather/temps on the California Zephyr in April & other questions

My jammies actually look more like little kid clothes than "night" clothes, hopefully the SSL staff will just perceive me a bit odd for my age. (I'll try to snag a pic of myself enroute.) I'm not planning on visiting the dining car this trip, so that shouldn't be an issue. On a separate thread...

Weather/temps on the California Zephyr in April & other questions

FWIW, I'll be traveling the CZ to California next week in coach and my plans are to wear my pajamas (pyjamas) on the train (they're football themed and nobody has ever objected when I wear them in public places like to my doctor's office), but as April weather in the Rockies and Sierras can be...

    snacks

Right on, RSG and DA. Fortunatly I've not encountered such practises yet here in the Denver area despite knowing a number of tightwad tavern owners who might certainly embrace such ideas had they witnessed what I did in CA. So far they only have the ball-bearing spouts on their upper-shelved...

    snacks

Off topic, but for those who believe counting cups is odd, the Sacramento bar where I had my wedding reception years ago used to weigh their booze bottles at each shift change to discourage "overpouring" by the bartenders. I understood that if the bottle weights did not jive with their sales of...

    good train song

Mick Avory rocks as always, too. The Kinks song's syncopation is spot on. Going a bit off topic, but in the UK before there was Thomas, there was Elton John's Rocket Record Company and its logo... Both designs were supposedly based on the "Little Engine that Could" story. One of RRC's star...
