MORE Newbie Empire Builder from Montana Questions!!

Although you can use the Metropolitan Lounge to park your bags, while at Union Station you should locate a map of the facility and walk over to the Great Hall. It was the station before the decison was made to construct the current commuter passenger rat maze. It is one of the classic...

Interesting report from the Amtrak OIG

To return to the topic, isn't Amtrak's current Inspector General a temporary appointment for the longtime IG who left abruptly? If I recall correctly, the temp's previous experience was in the Human Relations Department. Predictably, the activities of the IG department then turn to the...

    Sunset Limited BULLETIN

None of us have seen a schedule but I believe this would be the longest run (2728 miles) that Amtrak makes. I have to question the ability of the crew to keep the consist spiffy-spotless for that length of time.

When the nuts are running the Asylum (homeland security)

Our own cops have assured us they are capable of protecting every inch of Amtrak routes is South Dakota without any help whatsoever from Homeland Security! However, if the feds want to send so money to aid the effort, we will accept it and redouble our protection efforts.

    Amtrak in College Towns

There is a push in Iowa to extend the upcoming Chicago/Quad Cities service to Iowa City in hopes of attracting significant numbers of University of Iowa students. Like most states, Iowa is experiencing budget difficulties, however, and it is a long way from certain that it will be accomplished.

Why won't HSR be run by Amtrak?

The Acelas are a product of a Bombardier-Alstrom joint venture. Initial assembly was at LaPocatiere, Canada with the final production work occuring at Barre, Vt.

Why won't HSR be run by Amtrak?

I think Mr. Boardman is just being practical. You can achieve speeds of 90 to 110 mph on the freight right of ways of today with relatively minor improvements. To go much beyond that you need to purchase entirely seperate corridors, much of them in urban areas. Isn't California estimating $45...

    Picnic on the Platform

I doubt that Canada is a tangerine producing nation to begin with. I think it's very likely what you were trying to do was return produce of (perhaps California) to our country.

    New Amtrak Radio Commercial

One wonders if this ad was made specifically for the San Francisco market or if it is being aired in other Amtrak cities.

amtrak ceo whistle stop tour lands in havre

He took the Amtrak business car, the Beech Grove, with him. I'm disappointed by that; it would have been a fine chance to get out of Washington and really find out what is happening on the railroad.

    CT to CLE and Detroit

My timetable shows a 5:55am arrival on the Lake Shore Limited at Toledo. From there, a bus leaves at 6:30am and arrives in Detroit at 7:35. Unfortunately, if you are planning a stop at Cleveland, that arrival and departure will occur about 3:30 in the morning.

    Tighter emisions standards and Amtrak

The only diesel route I can think of that is owned by Amtrak is a portion of the Chicago/Michigan runs. The issue of electrification is essentially in the hands of the host railroad, not Amtrak.

    NARP Goes Anti-Gun

Folks, this is so much security theatre on Amtrak's part. For example, if I want to murder a bunch of people on the Empire Builder for some twisted reason, what is to stop me from boarding at, say, Detroit Lakes MN at 2am with my Uzi and hundreds of rounds of ammo in my carryon baggage? My...

    NARP Goes Anti-Gun

I agree that Congress should not be micromanaging Amtrak like this. However, Amtrak's management is capable of making stupid decisions, to me this is one of them. To whom should Amtrak be accountable? As General Motors just found out, when you take federal money, the feds can and probably...

    Amtrak Superliner in Google Earth/Map

If you look at Beech Grove on Virtual Earth, there are dozens of them.

Amtrak Looking for Consultant on Pioneer Route

Amtrak was required to conduct this study under last year's appropriation bill. Just because they are doing as they were ordered does not mean real progress toward service is being made. Viewed from a national perspective, this would seem to me to be less a priority than some other ones -- for...

Recent Trip on Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited

I thought Amtrak checked ID's the same way the airline clerks do. Can't believe he actually had a real ID with that name.

Recent Trip on Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited

A guy is taking drungs FROM Chicago to the Southwest? Would think the usual route is the other direction, unless it was just a personal supply. Did cops go directly to his room? I wonder how they knew he was a person of interest? Not really expecting an answer, just seems strange.

Cross Country Cafe on the City

Folks, you will see the Pope get married before you see Amtrak believe it has the political support necessary to outsource any significant portion of those services now performed by their employees. My own view of outsourcing is that it is usually an attempt to transfer management...

    Crescent Diner problems

Except when a railroad wishes to cross federally owned land, the matter of eminent domain is largely a matter of the applicable state law. That happens to be a very hot issue here right now as the DM&E (soon to be CP) wants to exercise that right to get from Wall, SD to the Powder River...
